Oliver Bangs, 80, of Spring Grove

Oliver "Ollie" Kenneth Bangs, 80, of Spring Grove, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at William S. Middleton Veterans Administration Hospital in Madison, Wis., from complications after surgery.
He was born on Nov. 23, 1931, in Spring Grove to Oliver H. and Tilda O. (Lunde) Bangs. He and his siblings were raised in a loving Lutheran home, rich in Norwegian heritage.
Ollie was a 1950 Spring Grove High School graduate. After graduating, he served in the United States Army from Nov. 7, 1952, until Nov. 1, 1954.
He then came home to run the family farm with his mother and his brother, Glenn. During this time, he also worked at Trane Company in La Crosse for five years.
He married Karen Heintz on Dec. 19, 1965. The couple ran a bowling alley in Spring Grove called "OK Lanes" for four years. Karen and Ollie later divorced.
Ollie worked at Camcar in Decorah, Iowa, as a Tool and Dye maker for over 20 years until his retirement in 1994. He was a lifelong area resident.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Caledonia and American Legion Post 249 in Spring Grove.
Ollie enjoyed playing softball and bowling. He would be on four bowling leagues at a time. He loved to hunt, fish and go to the casino. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and husband. He touched many lives, and he will be missed by many.
Survivors include his daughters, Cynthia (Bryan) Schulte of Waukon, Iowa, and Kristine Brainard of Decorah, Iowa; four grandchildren, Luke Schulte, Marissah Schulte, Bryce Schulte and Cheyenne Bangs; and a sister, Ruth (Bobby) Buddy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Travis, and his brothers, Maloy and Glenn Bangs.
Memorial services were Sept. 7 at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove. Pastor Stephanie Frey officiated. Burial was at the Prosper Cemetery in rural Canton with military rites provided by American Legion Post 249 of Spring Grove.
