Oren Charles Ellingson, 97, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare Center in Spring Grove, where he had been a resident since July of 2010.

He was born in Spring Grove on March 7, 1915, to Oliver and Minnie (Trehus) Ellingson. He was baptized and confirmed his faith at Trinity Lutheran Church of Spring Grove.

He graduated from Spring Grove High School in 1934. He attended Winona Business College for two years and then returned to Spring Grove where he was involved in the feed business for 55 years.

On Oct. 4, 1936, he married Alvina Corine Solum at the Solum farm on the date of Alvina's parent's 25th wedding anniversary.

Oren held many civic offices and was actively involved in community affairs. He was past president of the Commercial Club, served six years on the Spring Grove City Council, was a volunteer fireman for 17 years, held two terms on the Independent Board of Education #297, served as president of Trinity Lutheran Church, was treasurer for the Spring Grove Telephone Company for over 25 years and was a charter member and board member of MaCalGrove Country Club and the Spring Grove Lions Club.

He received the Honorary Chapter Farmers Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the local FFA chapter. In 1958, the Minnesota Statehood Centennial Commission honored Oren as a Minnesota Sports Champion for his many years in baseball. In 1988, he received the Citizen Recognition Award from the Spring Grove School district.

In 1990, the Syttende Mai Committee named him Business Person of the Year, and in 2000 Oren and Alvina were the Grand Parade Marshals.

Oren was well known for his athleticism. He played Town Team basketball for 10 years, Town Team baseball for 30 years, bowled until age 84, and golfed until 94.

Survivors include four sons, Charles (Audrey) of Caledonia, Thomas of Mabel, Mark (P.J.) of Lake George, Colo., and Dean (Jennifer) of Spring Grove; a daughter-in-law, Jean Ellingson of Rochester; nine grandchildren, Susan (Paul) Blaisdell of Dodge Center, Chuck Ellingson of Caledonia, Anne (Brett) Scheetz of Rochester, Beth (Fiance' Jesse) Ellingson of Denver, Colo., Karen (Shawn) Cornella of Leadville, Colo., David Ellingson of Rochester, Lucas (Carolann) Ellingson of Superior, Colo., Sam Ellingson of Winona, and Nicole Ellingson of Spring Grove; eight great-grandchildren, Jack, Kate, Ella, Samantha, Alex, Grant, Oliver and Witt; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years and two sisters, Margaret O'Neill and Doris Riede.

Funeral services will be on at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. Pastor Zane Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Roble Funeral Services of Spring Grove from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
