Palmer Kenneth Ovestrud died July 24, 2014, at the age of 84, at Green Lea Manor, Mabel.
Palmer was born Dec. 12, 1929, to Knute and Pauleen (Blake) Olson in Ada and baptized Dec. 26, 1929, in Twin Valley. In 1938, Palmer was adopted by Ernest and Barbo (Bergsgaard) Ovestrud of Spring Grove.
Palmer confirmed his faith at Trinity Lutheran Church on June 11, 1944. He attended Spring Grove School where he played football and was on the first team to win the state championship. He graduated from Spring Grove High School in 1950. In 1953-1954, he served in the military and was stationed in Mannheim, Germany.
He returned to Spring Grove where he farmed with his father before starting his own farm. Farming was a vocation that he was proud of and enjoyed. He was one of the first members of the Bear Creek Watershed Program. Palmer loved collecting red Farmall tractors and enjoyed Copenhagen and his cats.
Although Palmer had no biological children, Debbie Longmire became like a daughter to him. Their wonderful story began in 2007 when she stopped by his farm to ask if she could borrow a pair of bib overalls for a project. She saw that he was alone and was not able to keep up with his home and cats. She befriended Palmer and started to help him take care of his home. They became great friends, and their bond grew deep.
Palmer became a part of the Longmire family, who feel as though he has always been with them. He attended all of the family functions in these last years — holidays and weddings. Best of all, he became a grandpa to the children of Meghann (Longmire) Ybarra, Jennifer (Moore) Dehning, and Joel Moore. He enjoyed all his grand-babies and they loved and cherished him. The kids also enjoyed all the animals on his farm. Papa Palmer will be missed deeply, but he left this world happy and full of love.
Palmer is preceded in death by his biological parents, Knute and Pauleen Olson, his adoptive parents, Ernest and Barbo Ovestrud, and all his biological siblings: Emma, Charles, Pearl, Knute, and Raymond Olson.
Palmer is survived by his good friend, Debra Longmire and family, many nieces and nephews including Susan (Richard) Morris of Las Vegas; Roger Olson, Bryce Olson, and Parker Olson, all of Sartell; Sabrina (Gary) Moldoch, and Katelyn and Anabelle Moldoch of Sewell, New Jersey; Milly Kyseth and Jerry (Jenny) Kyseth of Spring Grove; Donald (Karen) Bentley of Farmington, MN; Merlin (Alice) Bentley of Ridgeway, IA; and many Bergsgaards.
The funeral service was held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spring Grove, on Monday, July 28, with Pastors Stephanie Frey and Zane Anderson officiating. Burial was at Trinity Cemetery, Spring Grove. Roble Funeral Home assisted the family.
Memorials are invited to the Spring Grove Aquatic Center.
