Ralph Alvin Lane, 90, of Spring Grove died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse, Wis.

Ralph was born Oct. 18, 1923, in Winneshiek County, Iowa, to Reinhard and Alvina (Auna) Lane. He was baptized on Nov. 11, 1923, and confirmed on Aug. 15, 1937, at Highland Lutheran Church, by the Rev. T.O. Tolo. Ralph was a 1942 Spring Grove High School graduate.

In 1946 Ralph enlisted in the United States Army; he continued his military career in the Army Reserves from 1949 to 1969. He was a lifelong Highland Lutheran Church member and a 60-year member of Spring Grove's Sons of Norway.

Ralph worked for Roverud Construction for one year, Four Square Coop for 24 years, worked for Kraus Oil for five years and was a bus driver for Spring Grove Public School for 50 years.

Survivors include three sisters; Helen Melbostad of Spring Grove, Evelyn Valdez of Lake Villa, Ill., and Lila Mahr of Waukon, Iowa; also 25 nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews survive.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Carl and Donna Myhre for their care of Ralph through the last years.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, March 1, at Highland Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, Iowa. The Rev. Kathy Wicks officiated. Private family burial will be at a later date.
