When looking at the burials in our old cemetery next to Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, I came across the name of Peder Andersen Aanderud, born Nov. 24, 1846, in Vardal, Oppland, and died Nov. 12, 1866.

I had never heard this name nor actually seen any mention of him in the local histories or in talking to older residents. But when I purchased the book "Viking Community Church 1887-1987", I came across this name again.

In 1886, August Aanderud along with Abraham Faleide, Andrew K. Gilbertson, Rasmus Wisness, Tosten P. Lommen and Timan L. Quarve, were the first men to settle in the area of Viking, Benson County, N.D.

I can't prove that August Aanderud ever lived in Spring Grove, but he seemed to be acquainted with the other five men.

August Maurits Larsen Aanderud was the son of Lars Andersen Aanderud, a brother to the Peder Aanderud who is buried in our old cemetery. The other five men also had connections to Spring Grove.

Abraham Faleide married Guri Hendricksen Tangen, daughter of Hendrick and Kari (Hendricksdatter) Tangen who once lived in Spring Grove but moved to North Dakota and settled near Sheyenne.

Abraham and Guri were married at the home of her brother, Nils Tangen who was married to Gudbjor Sylling, the daughter of Anders and Kjersti (Kjos) Sylling.

Andrew K. Gilbertson was the son of Knute and Gjore (Andersdatter) Gilbertson. Andrew married Liva Tweito, a daughter of Niels and Kari Christophersen Myrah, and a sister to Elling Tweito who has many descendants living today in Spring Grove.

Timan L. Quarve was the son of Levor and Christie (Knudsdatter) Berg. He married Sigrid Halvorsdatter Haraldset, a sister to George Peter and Gustav Arnston of Spring Grove.

Rasmus Wisness was born in Stryn, Nordford, Norway. He married Ragnild Hellerud who was born near Flaa, Hallingdal, Norway. She lived and worked in Spring Grove for at time. She went west and filed a claim in West Antelope Township near Viking in 1889, and her brother, Halgrim Hellerud, filed on a claim adjacent to her.

Halgrim married Aasine Myhro, a daughter of Arne and Anna (Kolsrud) Myhro of Spring Grove. Rasmus's relatives came to Spring Grove for a visit a few years back.

Tosten P. Lommen, son of Peter Jonsen Lommen and Jorend Olsdatter Riste, married Josephine Aanderud whose parents were Lars and Johanna (Askegaard) Aanderud, making her the sister of August, one of the first six settlers.

There is a great account of how these six men with connections to Spring Grove all settled in the area known as Viking.

Timan L. Quarve had a store for a time; there was also a blacksmith shop and a creamery.

We have several books at our library at Giants of the Earth, which gives a tremendous amount of history about these early settlers of this area. Contact us at the Heritage Center or email rosefarm@springgrove.coop.
