Five returning letterwinners will lead the Caledonia/Spring Grove co-op boys golf team onto the links this spring.

Seniors Derek Johnson and Joey Ehlers, plus sophomores Devin Schiltz, Sean Conner and Evan Welscher form the core of experience that head coach Jeremy Leis is counting on.

Ehlers and Schiltz were all-conference last spring. Ehlers and Johnson qualified for the section tournament.

"We are really young this year," Leis said. "We have a couple of other sophomores and possibly a freshman that will be playing varsity. The kids played a lot of golf last summer, and that will help them. Right now we are working really hard on our short games, and we know that this is what is going to help us compete at tournament time..."

The Warriors finished in a three-way tie for second place in the Three Rivers Conference (TRC) South last year, going 4-4 in conference matches.

Leis also has a couple of secret weapons at his disposal, Assistant Coach Ken Van Den Boom has been helping golfers learn the game for over 30 years and is a member of the Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame.

Assistant Coach Mitch Mullins also brings plenty of experience to the team. Formerly head of the program, Mullins has coached for around 20 years, Leis said.

"It is really nice to have two guys that I really respect there to help me and the kids. Mitch was my golf coach in high school."

Leis said Rushford-Peterson and Fillmore Central could be favorites in the TRC. In the sub-section, Lake City will be a powerhouse.
