Coaches, teachers hired
for 2013-'14 school year

Spring Grove School Board members took up a variety of topics at their May 20 meeting. Besides discussion about possible replacement of the district's gymnasium floor (see separate article), members took up a slew of personnel items.
They voted to accept the resignation of kindergarten teacher Amy Milbrandt.
Another vote increased the contract of elementary instructor Jennifer Solberg from .833 to 1.0 FTE (full-time equivalent) for the 2013-14 school year.
A similar action increased the contract of elementary teacher Erin Gjere from .167 to 1.0 FTE.
Three contracts for new hires were approved, all with the caveat that the successful completion of a background check is required.
The first was for elementary instructor Christopher Deck (at 1.0 FTE). The second was for Megan Miller for a .75 FTE Language Arts position. Lastly, Zach Hauser will be hired at .5 FTE as a Health and Physical Education instructor.
Coaching positions hired
A number of 2013-14 coaching positions were approved.
Zach Hauser will serve as head coach in football. Kevin Klug will be assistant football coach, and Heath Olson and Brian Anderson will split the other assistant football coach position. The junior high football coach will be Chris Strinmoen.
Volleyball head coaching duties will be handled by Michelle Anderson. The volleyball B-team coach will be Bethany Bergsgaard. Junior high volleyball coach will be Jennifer Schieber.
Girls basketball head coach will be Russ Larson. His assistant coach will be Heath Olson. Junior high head basketball coach will be Erin Konkel. The junior high assistant basketball coach will be determined later.
Wade Grinde was approved as boys basketball head coach. Assistant coach for that program will be Dave Konz. Junior high basketball head coach will be Al Lochner. His assistant will be Chris Strinmoen.
Spring Grove/Caledonia softball head coach will be Michelle Anderson. Softball assistant coach will be Tory Kale Schultz. Junior high softball coach will be Bethany Bergsgaard.
SEC to be expanded?
Udstuen reported that the Randolph School District has submitted a formal letter to the Southeast Conference (SEC) requesting that they be allowed to join the conference.
"A final decision will be made by the SEC executive board," she said, "They (Randolph) are 117 miles from here." No decision on the matter is reported as of yet.
The Spring Grove District plays in the SEC for volleyball, football and basketball.
Other news from the board
An audit proposal for the 2012-13 school year from Clifton Larson Allen LLP for a fee not to exceed $16,800 was approved.
An athletic training services contract for the 2013-14 school year from Winneshiek Medical Center was approved. The contract amount is $1,325.
A first reading of the Minnesota School Board model policy revision for the 2012 legislative session was approved. The second reading will occur at the next board meeting when the policy can be formally voted on.
Directors also reviewed the 2012-13 Q Comp Annual Report. Nearly half (48%) of licensed-staff members earned performance pay for meeting the school wide student achievement goal during the year.
The next regular meeting of the board will be Monday, June 17, at 7 p.m. in the Media Center.
