Twelve spellers (six from each Regional Spelling Bee) competed in the Final Spelling Bee on Feb. 26 at the Southeast Service Cooperative in Rochester.

Fifty-six students from 37 districts throughout southeast Minnesota participated in the two Regional Spelling Bees on Feb. 12.

Devon Nerstad, an eighth-grade student from Spring Grove Public Schools, was the first runner-up. He received a trophy and a Valerie's Spelling Bee Supplement Booklet.

Christine Farnberg, a sixth-grader from Rochester Catholic Schools was declared the champion after spelling the word INNOCUOUS.

Farnberg advances to the 86th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 28 to June 1 in Washington, DC.

Marisa Alvarado, an eighth-grade student from Kasson-Mantorville, was the second runner-up.
