Seventh, eighth and ninth-grade students at Spring Grove Public School who were part of the Junior High Knowledge Bowl team just completed their season. Junior high students at Spring Grove Public School have been building on their talents for knowing and recalling knowledge that they have learned in science, grammar, geography, art, math, literature and history as they competed in the Junior High Knowledge Bowl contests.
During the contests, teams of students competed in written and oral rounds testing their problem solving and critical thinking skills. It provides a format for student growth centered around academics.
Spring Grove Public School had 14 students competing in the contests. They practiced before school and competed in the three round-robin meets, which were held in October, November and December.
All three teams competed in the sub-regional meet, and two teams advanced to the regional meet; both meets were held in January.
"It is really nice that our school supports academic groups like this," remarked the coach, Scott Solberg. "It gives the students a chance to seriously prepare for the meets and allows them to do their best."
All meets began with a written round of 60 questions with team members working together followed by either three or four oral rounds.
The oral rounds consisted of 30 questions during round-robin meets and 45 questions during the sub-regional and regional meets.
Final totals were tallied at the end of each meet by adding up the points scored in each round and then ranking the teams accordingly.
At round-robin meets, big and small schools competed against each other. However, at sub-regional and regional meets, schools competed against those in their own tier.
Spring Grove is in Tier A along with Caledonia, Fillmore Central, Glenville-Emmons, Goodhue, Grand Meadow, Houston, Kingsland, Lanesboro, Mabel-Canton, Rushford-Peterson and Southland.
At the sub-regional meet, 24 teams competed against each other with the top 12 teams advancing to the regional meet. Two of Spring Grove's teams advanced to the regional meet.
"This is as far as the junior high competition goes. If this was a senior high Knowledge Bowl team, they would be headed to the state meet," commented Solberg.
"The kids did a great job in the competitions, and they also were very well-behaved, mature and respectful when we were out of the school building at the meets. To me, that says a lot about the students and the school environment that they come from."
Students competing in Junior High Knowledge Bowl this year from seventh grade were Claire Bratland and Adin Solum; from eighth grade were Grace Edgington, Benjamin Gray, Chase Grinde, Noah Myrah, Stine Myrah, Devon Nerstad and Brock Schuttemeier; and from ninth grade were Jordan Anderson, Jena Benson, Jordan Prahl, Brady Schuttemeier and Gabe Solum.
At the regional meet, Spring Grove's Team 1 placed second (103 points), just barely behind Rushford-Peterson Team 1 (104.5 points). Kingsland Team 1 placed third (94 points), Houston Team 2 placed fourth (91.5 points) and Spring Grove Team 2 tied for fifth with Southland Team 2 (88.5 points).
"It was very close [between first and second]," added Solberg. "Out of 240 questions, there was only a one-and-a-half point difference. They did a super job."
