Spring Grove High School's annual Awards Night this year included a stunning array of art pieces and woodworking projects showcasing the current students' many talents.

The annual awards night was held May 27 this year. Awards were presented to seniors and underclassman by school principal, Nancy Gulbranson

Scholarships were handed out by school superintendent, Rachel Udstuen, and student counselor, Scott Solberg, as well as various scholarship representatives.

Overall, more than $48,000 in renewable and one-time scholarships were announced that evening, in addition to a $13,000 Presidential Scholarship to a student attending Central College.

From the American Legion Post #249, $500 each went to Addison Cross, Kayla Hahn, Nicole Hansen, Josh Olerud, Angel Spinden, Madison Thompson and Morgan VanMinsel.

The Caledonia Masonic Lodge #20 awarded $200 to Randi Mehus.

Tri-County Electric Co-op bestowed $400 scholarships upon Brandon Schuttemeier and Angel Spinden. They've given out $95,000 in scholarships in the last five years to more than 225 seniors.

The Wilmington Lutheran Church Women gave a $200 scholarship to Angel Spinden.

Houston County 4-H awarded an amount to be determined each to Randi Mehus, Josh Olerud and Brandon Schuttemeier.

The Arlin Falck Foundation scholarship of $525 each went to Taylor Borreson and Brandon Schuttemeier.

The Spring Grove Commercial Club issued $200 scholarships for Academics to Randi Mehus, Josh Olerud, Angel Spinden and Kayla Hahn; for Attendance to Randi Mehus; for Citizenship to Levi Hermanson; for the Fine Arts to Josh Olerud and Angel Spinden; and for Athletics to Blaine Storlie and Addison Cross.

Merchants Bank provided a $350 scholarship to Randi Mehus.

Trinity Lutheran Church of Spring Grove provided scholarships of $125 each to Levi Hermanson, Aryn Jahnke, Kyle Lee, Brandon Schuttemeier and Madison Thompson.

The Spring Grove Education Association in memory of Henry Evenmoe presented $500 to Randi Mehus.

The Syttende Mai Royalty Scholarship (funded by Commercial Club) in the amount of $300 each was awarded to Aryn Jahnke, Angel Spinden and Morgan VanMinsel.

The Burtness Estate bestowed $125 upon Angel Spinden.

The Sundet Scholarship of $2,000 value each ($500 first year, renewable for four total years) went to Aryn Jahnke, Randi Mehus, Angel Spinden, Blaine Storlie and Morgan VanMinsel.

The Carlton Kroshus Scholarship of $4,000 value each ($1,000 first year, renewable for total of four years) went to Randi Mehus, Josh Olerud, Angel Spinden, Blaine Storlie and Morgan VanMinsel.

The local Dollars for Scholars (DFS) organization gives scholarships to all graduating seniors that are continuing their education.

Receiving $400 each were Taylor Borreson, Amber Franzen, Nicole Hansen, Evan Howard, Kyle Lee, Lexi Rains and Brandon Schuttemeier.

Receiving $500 each from DFS were Addison Cross, Levi Hermanson, Aryn Jahnke, Blaine Storlie and Maddison Thompson.

Receiving $600 each from DFS were Kayla Hahn, Randi Mehus, Josh Olerud, Angel Spinden and Morgan VanMinsel.

Receiving a $13,000 Presidential Scholarship from Central College was Kayla Hahn.

The Ostern Family Scholarship for $500 each was awarded to Randi Mehus and Blaine Storlie.

The Spencer Yohe Tri-State Substitute Teaching Scholarship for $100 each was given to Brandon Schuttemeier and Angel Spinden.

Attendance and other awards

Perfect Attendance for the 2012-2013 school year (seventh to 12th grade) was awarded to Zach Folstad and Mitchell Anderson.

Senior attendance awards (from seventh to 12th grades) went to: Randi Mehus - missing only eight and half total days; Angel Spinden - missing only nine total days; and Kayla Hahn - missing only nine and a half total days.

Presidential Education Awards (3.5 GPA or higher, given to eighth and 12th grade students) were given to the following eighth graders: Desirae Brainard, Grace Edgington, Chase Grinde, Kelsey Hermanson, Alison Jahnke, Noah Myrah, Stine Myrah and Devon Nerstad; and these seniors: Salome Hagelstein, Kayla Hahn, Randi Mehus, Joshua Olerud, Angelica Spinden, Blaine Storlie and Madison Thompson.

National Choral Award was bestowed upon Angel Spinden.

Senior Athlete Awards were handed out to: Brandon Schuttemeier - six varsity letters (4 football, 2 basketball); Nicole Hansen - eight varsity letters (4 basketball, 3 track, 1 cheerleading); Addison Cross - seven varsity letters (4 basketball, 3 volleyball); Josh Olerud - eight varsity letters (4 football, 4 basketball); Blaine Storlie - nine varsity letters (4 football, 3 basketball, 2 baseball); and Randi Mehus - 12 varsity letters (5 track, 4 basketball, 3 volleyball).

Athletes of the Year are Randi Mehus and Blaine Storlie.

The Student Council gavel was also officially passed from outgoing president, Blaine Storlie, to newly elected president Nicole Ellingson for the 2013-14 school year.
