School sees 31 new students this year

Four international students are calling Spring Grove home for the current school year. They are, left to right: Arantza Lizarraga (Spain), Salome Hegelstein (Germany), Tanguy de Fresse de Monval (France) and Johanna Koch (Germany).
A new school year is always busy with students transitioning into new grade levels, as well as kindergarten students learning the ropes of what school is all about.
This year at Spring Grove Public School there have been many students, learning the ropes - the school has 31 new students in its enrollment.
"We are very excited to have this growth in our student body," commented Rachel Udstuen, superintendent.
"We have heard comments from new families that the school and staff have been very welcoming and willing to help their children adjust to a new school and schedule. Our current students also make the transition for new students easier because they, too, are kind and welcoming.
"New families are impressed with the technology availability, including the one-to-one laptop program, iPads in the classroom and Smart Boards."
Twenty-nine seniors graduated this past June and 38 students were registered for kindergarten. The 31 new students are beyond these planned for students entering kindergarten.
Twenty-three of the new students are living in Spring Grove, four are exchange students, and four have open-enrolled from other districts.
"Our staff has always been great at incorporating new methods of teaching in the classroom and are doing innovative things while still stressing the fundamentals of a quality education," Udstuen added.
"What our teachers are doing sets an environment for our students to thrive and be successful. We are very thankful for the effort that all of the staff puts into each day of teaching."
New families have moved into the district because of employment, good and affordable housing, as well as alumni moving back by choice, Udtsuen pointed out.
She added that new families have also commented that they like all of the opportunities that are available for children in the community, including the pool, cinema, library, community theater, Parks and Rec programs, the art gallery and the heritage center classes, and all of the other various activities in town.

Earth had its warmest temperature ever in 2015 and weather extremes are continuing into 2016, including locally with heavy rains causing flooding. Are you concerned?
Yes, human-caused climate change is a serious problem.
Yes, but this is a natural cycle that will pass.
