Spring Grove/Caledonia sailed through the first two rounds of the Section 1A East Softball Tournament without allowing a base hit or a single run to score last week.

`With the No. 1 seed, the girls (16-1) took on No. 2 Cotter (15-6) in the May 23 subsection final just as the Herald was going to press. That game will be part of the next edition's playoff coverage.

SG/C (12) (11) 9 2 x - 34 25 0

Winning pitcher Samantha Bratland threw a perfect game for SG/C, striking out 12 of the 15 batters she faced.

Eleven errors also helped doom the Tigers (0-16), who exited the tourney with a 34-0 run-rule shortened loss. Lake City pitchers only gave up 6 earned runs from the massive total.

Fifteen players batted for SG/C, setting up a virtual merry-go-round on the base-paths in the first (12-run), second (11-run), and third (9-run) innings. There were 25 hits for the hosts including 7 doubles.

Bratland (4-5, 4 RBI) and Lottie Augedahl (5-6, 6 RBI) had two doubles each. The rest of the two-baggers went to Sophia Augedahl, Jordan Anderson, and Mariah Schmitz.

The 34-run total is a program record just surpassing a 33-0 win back in 2008. It is thought to be the second perfect game for an SG/C pitcher. Current junior high softball coach Bethany Bergsgaard pitched the previous perfect game in 2002.
