The boys and girls soccer teams hosted by Caledonia opened play last week. Unfortunately for players from Caledonia, Spring Grove and Houston, both squads are still looking for their first win.

C/SG/H boys versus La Crosse Central, Aug. 27

The Red Raiders defeated their hosts 8-1 on a warm, muggy opening night. Justin Inglett broke the ice for the Warriors, but couldn't make up for multiple scores from Wisconsin players Nic Fossum, Omar Jandal, and Reid Crayton.

"It was a tough game with the heat," Warrior coach Dustin Moburg said. "We have to improve on our man marking during set pieces and dead ball situations."

The JV squad from La Crosse also won, 3-0.

C/SG/H boys versus Winona Cotter, Aug. 29

C/SG/H played much better against the Ramblers, Moburg said after a 3-0 loss two nights later. "The team is working together and communicating very well," he noted. "We had our chances but could not quite break through their overloaded central defense."

C/SG/H goalie Nick Strabley worked hard throughout managing 7 saves. Caledonia made 15 shots on goal compared to 20 for the visitors. Rambler goalies Charlie Gardner and John Grattan III combined for the shutout.

Sophomore forward Sang Hyuk Lee scored twice while junior Marcus Kuhlmann (listed at defender) had the other goal.

"I really appreciated the sportsmanship on both sides of the field," Moburg said. "We look forward to playing Cotter again in the coming weeks."

In the JV match, Cotter outscored Caledonia 5-0. The Ramblers took 17 shots to 10 for their hosts. Moburg said that the JV squad showed improvement as well with sharp passing and good communication. Cotter also passed the ball well, he added.

C/SG girls at Kasson-Mantorville, Aug. 27

K-M defeated Caledonia 9-0 in the season opener for both teams, taking seven times as many shots on goal (28-4) as the visitors. KoMets Delany Bartel, Brooke Kollman, Paisley Jones, Abbie Overton, Abby Wifham, Maddie Worden, and Sarah Bernards managed to put the ball in the net while goalie Holly Hackenmiller got the shutout.

The Caledonia B team lost 2-0.
