Spring Grove seventh grader Alex Folz will be one of four athletes in a four-state area to compete in his age group at the Metrodome in the 2013 Punt, Pass and Kick finals. The Minnesota Vikings competition area includes not only Minnesota but also North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa.
Alex Folz Region PP&J Champ
Folz, a three-sport athlete, first won the local Spring Grove age 12 and 13 boys championship conducted by the Spring Grove Athletic Boosters.
He went on to win the regional competition at Mankato but had to wait to find out how his scores compared to those of the other regional champions.
Only the four best scores in the four-state area qualify for the finals in Minneapolis in conjunction with a Vikings game. The competition will be on Saturday evening, Dec. 14 at the Metrodome. The finalists will be recognized the following day during halftime of the Vikings versus Eagles game.
Punt, Pass & Kick is a three-fold contest measuring both accuracy and distance in punting, passing and kicking off a tee.
Folz is only the third Spring Grove athlete to reach this lofty goal but the second in his household. His sister Aly Folz, currently a high school senior, was one of two Lions girls - along with Taylor Elton - to be a Metrodome finalist.
Alex who played for the Spring Grove/Mabel-Canton/North Winn junior high football team last fall, is the son of Paul and Kristy Folz of Spring Grove and also the younger brother of Spring Grove High school's career rushing leader Andy Folz.
