SG vs. Lanesboro, Oct. 8

The Lions swept the Burros on Tuesday, winning in straight sets (25-8, 25-18, 25-12).

Spring Grove achieved an outstanding 36% hitting efficiency rating, scoring 28 kills with only 7 errors. That was the Lions' best of the season and more than double the 16% they totaled in the teams' first meeting in mid-September.

The Burros created only 5 fewer attacks but finished with 16 fewer kills and only 4% hitting efficiency (12 kills, 10 errors).

Also at the net, the Lions posted an 8 to 1 margin over LHS in ace blocks.

Both teams had some trouble at the line. Spring Grove broke even with 9 service aces and 9 errors while Lanesboro lost 5 points with 2 aces and 7 errant serves.

Aly Folz was the most efficient Lion hitter with 8 kills and only one misfire along with one ace block.

Nicki Ellingson led all scorers with 16 points including match-high totals of 9 kills, 4 blocks and 3 ace serves. Samantha Bratland also served more aces than miscues, scoring 9 times overall with 5 kills, one ace block and 3 ace serves.

Attacking with no hitting errors were Tara Solberg with 3 kills and setter Sammi Boyd with one. Kailee Bjerke contributed 4 points with 2 kills and 2 ace blocks.

For the Burros, Kaia Hongerholt and Olivia Haug had 4 kills each.

SG dominated set one (25-8) and set three (25-12) while the Burros played best in set two (SG 25-18) with 7 of their 12 total kills - the only set in which Lanesboro had more kills than hitting missteps.

LHS scored the first four points of set two, which was tied five times. Spring Grove eventually used an 8-point run (served by Sierra Hunter) to win by 7.

After winning the season and SEC opener, Lanesboro (2-14, 1-11 SEC) is assured of finishing in the cellar of the SEC East for the second straight season, this year five matches behind Hope Lutheran. Spring Grove improved to 17-9, 9-3 SEC.

Including a 3-1 decision earlier this season at Lanesboro, the Lions have now won 10 straight matches in a series they lead by 10 matches, 38-28-2

The Lion B-team (1-11) and freshmen (1-7) both fell to the Burros by 2-0 scores.
