April 2 found the Lions ready to open their softball season, hosting Hope Lutheran in Caledonia. In a merry-go-round of base runners, Spring Grove/Caledonia defeated the Patriots, 32-2.

Hope took the lead in the first inning when sophomore Dakota Ellinghuysen drove in the first score of the season for the Patriots. She also tripled in the fifth, driving in the only other HL run of the afternoon.

The Lions swatted 25 hits and took advantage of 8 errors, scoring in every inning they batted. They also played error-free defense.

Extra-base hits included triples by Shannon Doering in the second, Amanda Heberlein in the third and Lottie Augedahl in the fourth.

Augedahl also had a double, going 3 for 6 with 4 runs batted in. Kayla Krueger had a double as did Julya Diersen and Taylor Augedahl, who went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs. Heberlein went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs. Samantha Bratland went 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs.

SG/C pitcher Bratland threw the first three innings, striking out 7 while walking 4 and giving up only 1 hit.

Heberlein pitched the last two innings, striking out 4, walking 3 and giving up 2 hits. Lottie Augedahl caught for both.

Sophomore Magen Meyer pitched four full innings for the Patriots, striking out one batter, walking 7 and giving up all 25 hits.

On Thursday, April 12, the Lions will play Houston on the road. Mabel-Canton will come to Spring Grove to play on Monday, April 16. Three days later, the Lions will travel to Glenville-Emmons.
