3 years all-conference

Five returning starters are ready to tee it up for the Caledonia/Spring Grove boys. Seniors Devin Schiltz and Isaak Solum, juniors Drew Stemper and Hunter Rud plus sophomore Cody Breeser all played varsity rounds last year.

The Warriors went 13-11-1 overall, 7-3 in Three Rivers Conference action. The team took third place in the TRC South and tied for fourth in the 11-team TRC Tourney. The Warriors were third among eight teams at sub-section, qualifying three players for the section tournament.

SCHILTZ has made all-conference for three straight years. He tied for fourth among 48 golfers at sub-section and made the cut for section for the last two years.

RUD is a two-time all-conference player. He took 13th place at sub-section and also went to section twice. STEMPER qualified for the section tourney last year. He finished 12th in sub-section play. BREESER also made the sub-section roster.

Seniors Zach Sanness, Larry Schulte, and Riley Johnson are also set to hit the links, along with junior Cole Konkel and sophomores Rodney Tweito, Symon Ely, and Romish Patel.

In addition, freshmen Carson Bullerman, Logan Larson, Matt Morrow, and Ryan Schroeder will play for C/SG, as well as seventh-grader Mick Bullerman.

Head coach Jeremy Leis returns for a third year. "We should be able to battle for our side of the conference with Rushford-Peterson and Fillmore Central," he said.

"We have some solid players returning, and we have a couple of younger kids who, by the end of the year, are going to be playing varsity.

"My philosophy on golf is to learn to play the game intelligently - to learn to manage your game. One thing that Mitch (Mullins) and I will stress is to be able to save strokes by not making bad decisions.... Know your game well enough and be humble enough to say 'If I can't hit this shot, then let's find a way to minimize the damage.

"We'll hammer on how to play a good short game. A long drive may be showy, but accurate chipping and putting wins tournaments," Leis noted. "Smart play can save three to four strokes per team member.

As this issue went to press, only Valley High Golf Course near Houston and La Crescent was open for play, but warmer temperatures and some dry weather could have Caledonia's Ma Cal Grove open before long, Leis said.
