On Dec. 1 the Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston gymnastics squad faced five other programs in the Byron/Lourdes "Jeanne Harris Memorial Invitational". It was their first meet of the season.
The Caledonia co-op team competed on vault, parallel bars, balance beam and floor routine. Three Warriors competed as "All-Around" gymnasts, taking on the gamut.
Team totals were: Byron/Lourdes Team A 123 points, La Crescent 121.4, Red Wing 118.45, Pine Island 117.95, Byron/Lourdes Team B 112.15, Caledonia 109.95 and St. Peter 108.5.
On vault, freshman Abby Hoskins achieved an 8.5, which tied for 12th in the event. Classmate Sierra Hunter and sophomore Kaylee Cavanaugh both recorded scores of 8.2. Junior Tara Solberg had an 8.15 while freshman Erin Schultz scored a 7.6.
Senior Skylar Schoh earned a 7.1 on parallel bars (good for seventh place). Solberg took away a 6.4. Hoskins earned a 5.6 while Schultz had a 4.9.
Junior Emily Hahn achieved a 7.3 on balance beam, which tied her for ninth place. Solberg had a 6.85. Hunter took 6.7 points while Hoskins (5.5) and freshman Alissa Peterson (4.6) also competed for the varsity in the event.
Hunter took a 7.6 on floor exercise, which was the 12th best score on the event. Solberg earned a 6.4. Hoskins finished with a 5.8, while Hahn got a 5.6. Freshman Cassidy Bauer took 4.1 points for the varsity.
Hunter, who hails from Spring Grove, scored 28.75 in all-around, which was good for ninth place. Solberg, another Spring Grove competitor who is also a team captain, finished at 27.8. Hoskins totaled 25.2.
"Overall the girls handled the first Varsity meet well for only being in the gym for two-and-half weeks," Warrior coach Jackie Johnson noted. "Vault remains our strongest event, followed by beam, floor and bars."
Johnson said that Cavanaugh, a key team member/captain, was only recently released to return to practice following an injury. The sophomore is expected to be allowed to compete on more events next week, which will probably improve team scores, she added.
The Warriors' next meet is Thursday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m, when La Crescent visits Caledonia. On Dec. 14, Pine Island makes the same trip.
