Gymnasts win opener, place fourth at tourney

The Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston gymnastics team opened their 2013-14 season with a win at La Crescent on Dec. 3, then traveled to the Byron/Lourdes tourney four days later.
C/SG/H at La Crescent
The Warriors totaled 123.875 points in varsity events to the Lancers' 107.675.
Kaylee Cavanaugh (8.35) and Sierra Hunter (7.9) took the top spots in floor routine. Chloe McAllister of La Crescent finished third (7.3). She was followed by Warrior gymnasts Jessilyn Knutson (7.25), Tara Solberg (7.075) and Abby Hoskins.
On balance beam, Hunter took the top score (8.0). She was followed by teammate Emily Hahn (7.5), and two Lancers. Abby Lampert was third with 7.025, while Kelsey Redman earned 6.975 points. Cavanaugh was next, at 6.85. Solberg tied Skylar Burg of La Crescent at 6.6 points, while Hoskins had 6.15.
The four top spots on uneven bars all went to C/SG/H. Cavanaugh won the station with an 8.2, followed by Hunter (7.925), Hoskins (7.75) and Solberg (7.325). Burg led the Lancers with a 6.95.
A traditionally strong event for the Warriors is vault, and this year is no exception. The top four scores came from Solberg (8.4), Hunter (8.35), Hoskins (8.2) and Cavanaugh (8.2). Burg earned an 8.075 followed by teammate Jordan Peterson (7.7). Emily Hahn earned a 7.65.
The top four all-around scores again went to C/SG/H with Hunter totaling 32.175, Cavanaugh 31.6, Solberg 29.4 and Hoskins 28.9. Burg took 28.2 while teammate Abby Lampert totaled 26.225.
C/SG/H coach Jackie Johnson said both her varsity and JV teams met their early-season goals. "I was hoping for the varsity to hit 118 points," she noted, "and they went above and beyond that. (The) goal for the JV was to have a team total of 80, and they scored 94.4. Overall for an early season meet, I am very happy with the results.
A few of the top Caledonia JV scores include vaults of 8.1 from Erin Schultz, 7.9 from Knutson and 7.15 from Kerrigan Scanlan.
Bars had Schultz at 5.5, Hahn at 4.5 and Cayla Schleich at 3.85. Beam included a 6.3 from Peterson, as well as Knutson, and a 5.0 from Scanlan.
Floor had Schultz earning 6.7 points, which was the same as Hahn. Cassidy Bauer took 6.35. Scanlan was the lone JV competitor in all-around. She totaled 20.35 points.
Caledonia traveled to Byron on Saturday, Dec. 8, competing against five teams in the Jeanne Harris Memorial Invite. The Warriors finished fourth with 121.4 points.
Byron/Lourdes topped the field at 128.85, followed by Pine Island (126.8), Rockford (123.6), C/SG/H, La Crescent (116.45) and Red Wing (112.75).
Complete results were not released before this issue went to press, but the top five finishers on each station were made available to media outlets.
Vault was won by Pine Island's Siera McNallan (9.3). She also had the top scores on Bars (8.5), Beam (8.95) and Floor (9.2). That assured the senior gymnast an All-Around victory, where she totaled 35.95 points.
Hunter took fourth in vault for the Warriors with a score of 8.55.
Cavanaugh took second in Bars (8.45) while Hunter finished fourth on that event (8.15).
In the All-Around competition, Hunter took fourth place with an excellent total of 31.45 points.
