Some mild and windy weather helped to dry out the local links last week, and the Caledonia/Spring Grove girls golf team (3-0, 2-0 TRC) took advantage of the situation by winning their first three meets of the year.

C/SG vs. Southland, April 7

Monday's meet featured a 236 from the Warriors while the Rebels had to settle for an "incomplete," since they had only two golfers. The venue was Caledonia's Ma Cal Grove.

Sophomore Ashley Gavin medaled with a score of 57. She was followed by classmate Claudia Melde (59) and eighth-graders Rebekah Schroeder (59) and Katrina Paulson (61). Seniors Rachel Peterson (62) and Julia Sand (67) also played on the varsity round. Senior Karli Fishbaugher (74) competed as an individual.

"This meet was a little unexpected as we haven't been able to practice outside yet," C/SG coach Jacquelyn Snodgrass said. "The girls did a good job considering this is the first time they've hit on real grass, and we haven't had a chance to chip or putt outside yet this spring. We need to work on eliminating our high score holes which will come with added short game practice.

C/SG vs. Chatfield, April 8

The Warriors hosted Chatfield the following afternoon, defeating the Gophers 224-277.

Gavin medaled, cutting her total to 53. Schroeder hit a 54 while Peterson (58) and Melde (59) rounded out the varsity scorebook. Paulson (62) and Sand (66) also played for the varsity, while Fishbaugher (playing as an individual) shaved five strokes from her previous total (69).

"I give the girls a lot of credit playing two meets in a row without having a practice outside yet, and they played a little better today than yesterday," Snodgrass said.

"Ashley and Rebekah both put together nice rounds. It is promising to see the girls improving, and they will continue to improve once we can get some good practices in and work on our short games.

C/SG at Waukon, April 11

The team packed up and headed for Iowa on Friday, competing at Waukon. C/SG defeated the Indians on their home turf, 222-233.

Gavin medaled, cutting her round to 50. Melde hit a 54 while Paulson (58) and Schroeder (60) completed the varsity score. Fishbaugher also played varsity for the Warriors.

"This was a good win against a solid program," Snodgrass said. "Our team score continues to improve with several girls contributing. Ashley continues to play good golf and has been medalist in all 3 meets this week.

"Claudia has also been solid all week and played well today. Rebekah and Katrina have really stepped up as eighth graders and posted some good scores. Our short games are still a little rusty and need improvement, but that will come around as we get more practice time in outside."
