Spring Grove finished regular season play with a strong showing against SEC West opponent Glenville-Emmons on Oct. 16. The Wolverines were celebrating Parents Night, Senior Night and holding a cancer fundraiser, but in spite of all the festivities could not rise to the level of play their guests exhibited - 25-14, 25-11, 25-14.

Finishing 15-11 overall with a second-place 10-3 record in the SEC East, Spring Grove was awarded the No. 6 seed in a very tough sub-section (1A East) the next day. G-E (6-20) finished fourth in the SEC West at 4-9 and was seeded at No. 11 in Section 1A West play.

Nicki Ellingson had 15 of the Lions' 33 kills while G-E had only 12 kills and 13 errors. The Lions also scored seven times blocking G-E attacks including five by Ellingson. Considering ace blocks and hitting errors, Spring Grove outscored the Wolverines 53-30 at the net.

The Lions also held a decided scoring advantage from the service line. Serving 93%, Spring Grove had 9 aces with 5 misfires. G-E placed the ball in play 83% of the time, with 2 aces and 7 errors.

Samantha Bratland scored with 4 kills, one block and posted 3 aces while serving 19 for 19. Addison Cross put up 22 set assists along with 4 kills of her own plus one block and 2 ace serves.

Also with more kills than errors were Tara Solberg with 4 finishes and Randi Mehus with 3. Sammi Boyd served 16 for 17 with a match-high 4 aces.

Spring Grove led throughout the first two sets and opened set three with five points from Ellingson. G-E came back to take the lead at 8-7 before the Lions regained control with a 7-1 run - starting with back-to-back kills from Solberg followed by kills from Cross and Bratland, capped with an ace served by Cross.

G-E still leads the all-time series 11 to 8, but Spring Grove has won the last four. The B-team Lions won 2-0.

The Lions opened sub-section play with a 3-1 defeat of No. 11 Lanesboro on Oct. 22. SG advances to the Thursday, Oct. 25 quarterfinal match at Harmony verus No. 3 Fillmore Central (25-4) at 7 p.m. Semi-final action will move to Mayo Civic Center two days later.
