Jordan Jaster against Houston
The Lion lads headed to Houston on Jan. 21, then traveled to Leroy-Ostrander three days later. Both road trips resulted in lopsided victories for SG.

The Jan. 27 game at Mabel-Canton has been postponed to Feb. 7

SG at Houston

The Lions netted the first 9 points on the way to a 45-18 halftime lead and then scored the first 18 points after intermission, blowing away the Hurricanes 78-37.

SG defenses dictated the tempo, logging 23 steals while forcing 40 Houston turnovers, the most any Lion opponent has yielded this season. The theft parade produced 25 SG fast-break points.

Sophomore Brady Schuttemeier came up with 8 steals while freshman Chase Grinde had 6, both of which represented new personal records.

Spring Grove also scored over the Houston zone defense with 29 perimeter points. Five Lions hit the net from beyond the 3-point arc, sinking 8 of 23 treys (35%).

Another key was 16 SG offensive rebounds, which led to a 25-6 scoring advantage on second chances.

All 10 Lions seeing action scored and rebounded. Alex Engelhardt led with 17 points. Dustin Vickerman totaled 14 while Grinde and Schuttemeier added 13 points apiece.

Schuttemeier and Vickerman led rebounding efforts with 8 and 7 respectively. Engelhardt also contributed 7 assists to the offense.

Freshman Brock Schuttemeier had his first career varsity field goal, and freshman Devon Nerstad passed for his first varsity assist.

Including an early December 43-point home win, the Lions have now won 25 straight and 43 of the last 44 against the Hurricanes.

SG improved to 15-3 (12-0 SEC) while Houston left with a 4-10 record (4-7 SEC).

In the B-team game, Houston completed a season sweep with a second 4-point win against SG, 37-33.

The schools split on junior high contests with SG taking the eighth grade game 58-15 and Houston winning their seventh grade match 40-30. The Lion eighth graders, including a recent 71-3 win over North Winneshiek, remain unbeaten at 12-0. The seventh graders (5-8) had downed North Winn 31-22.

SG at Leroy-Ostrander

Grinde, battling a recent illness, tossed in 35 points while Tanner Sanness came off the sideline for a 10-point, 12-rebound double double at L-O. SG won running away, 79-30.

Those were both career-high statistics as were 7 rebounds and 4 steals for sophomore Gabe Solum and 7 steals for Engelhardt.

SG had half a hundred at halftime (50-16) and then outscored L-O 29-14 during a running-clock shortened second half.

The Cardinals struggled from the start against the Lion full-court defense, losing 17 turnovers during their first 24 possessions. SG came up with 19 steals, but 20 Lion fouls were also more than usual.

Against the L-O zone defense, SG had season highs with 31 three-point shots and 80 total attempts from the field. The Lions matched their season best with 10 made triples (32%) but were less impressive while missing more free throws (15) than they hit (13).

Even with leading rebounder Brady Schuttemeier home ill, SG had very impressive season-highs of 32 offensive rebounds and 51 total boards. In addition to Sanness' 12 rebounds, Vickerman had 9, Engelhardt 8, Grinde 7 and Solum 7.

For the sixth time in 19 games, the Lions had more assists (16) than turnovers (9). Engelhardt was the leader with 5 assists while Dylan Kampschroer (3 assists), Elliott Cross (2), Sanness (2) and Brock Schuttemeier (1) all passed out assists without any turnovers.

All-SEC forward Zach Royston had 10 points, 12 rebounds and at least 3 blocked shots for L-O. The senior standout was last year's conference rebound leader.

Working hard all night against an aggressive SG defense, Cardinal point guard Nate Bunne scored 10 points and assisted 4 times.

Including an earlier 46-point win against the Cards, SG (16-3, 13-0 SEC) extended the winning streak against L-O to 25 games. The Cardinals dropped to 1-13 (0-11 SEC).

Due to weather postponements, this game was the opener of a boys-girls varsity double header with the B-team and junior high games canceled.
