The Sub-section 1AA East Softball Tournament opened on May 20. For the second-seeded girls from Spring Grove/Caledonia, that meant a home game versus Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/ Kingsland (GMLOK), which they won 10-0 in six innings. Second round action brought Dover-Eyota to town. SG/C won that game as well, 3-1.

First Round:

No. 2 SG/C vs. No. 7 GMLOK

GMLOK 000 000 - 0 1 1

SG/C 010 612 - 10 11 0

The 10-run rule shortened the game, which featured a one-hit shutout from SG/C pitcher Samantha Bratland, who was ably aided by error-free play by her teammates.

Bratland also went 4 for 4 from the plate. Matison Scanlan hit 2 for 3 in a game that saw a dozen singles and no extra-base hits.

SG/C broke the game open in the fourth inning, sending up the side and then some with 11 at-bats. When the dust settled, they had scored 6 runs on 5 hits and two walks.

SG/C added a run in the fifth via back-to-back singles from Alexy Bearbower, Angie Augedahl and Scanlan.

The hosts shut the door in the bottom of the sixth with no outs after Bratland and Lauren Rusert singled, and a pair of walks sent another run home. A ground ball from Angie Augedahl then raised their margin to 10, and the game was over.

SG/C strung together five of their seven hits in the third inning with singles from Cara Stemper, Lottie Augedahl, Lauren Rusert and Taylor Augedahl, plus a double from Bratland. It was enough to send three runs home, which was all the hosts needed.

Bratland threw a no-hitter, but D-E still scored once. The sophomore hurler struck out 13 while only walking one.

The Eagles attempted a rally in the final frame when Hollywood Hermanson reached base on an error, then advanced and scored via some aggressive base running on two ground balls that resulted in throws to first. With two down, Bratland finished the game with a strike out.
