During the three softball games that survived last week's weather, the Spring Grove/Caledonia girls outscored their softball opponents 31-3, sweeping an April 29 conference doubleheader at Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/ Kingsland and then taking a non-league contest at La Crescent on April 30. Snow and cold rain postponed five games later in the week.

Samantha Bratland pitched a no-hitter in the opening game, won by SG/C by a score of 9-0. Coach Michelle Anderson said her sophomore hurler exhibited "great control of her pitches as well as very good movement. She struck out 12 with only two walks."

"We were also really hitting the ball hard in that game, and our speed on the bases was definitely a factor in all our scores."

Emily Ranzenberger went 2 for 3 at the plate, while seven SG/C players had runs batted in, including two from Bratland. Lauren Rusert hit safely on 3 of 5 occasions. Marie Doering and catcher Lottie Augedahl had two hits each.

A pair of freshmen came in to relieve Bratland and catcher Augedahl in the nightcap. Jordan Anderson took up station behind the plate, while Sophia Augedahl provided six innings of pitching. SG/C prevailed again, 12-2 in six innings.

"The freshmen battery did a great job both defensively and offensively," Anderson reported.

"Sophia (Augedahl) had a huge double to knock in three runs in the fourth, and Jordan had a base hit up the middle to drive in our 12th run to end the game in the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule."

Slugger Rusert went 2 for 4, both doubles.

In addition to tossing a two-hitter. Bratland crushed a fourth-inning pitch, driving a 2-RBI home run over the center field fence. Taylor Augedahl and Rusert each went 3 for 4 on the night with the latter hitting a single, double and triple. A double by Angie Augedahl in the seventh inning scored two runs.

SG/C travels to Plainview-Elgin-Millville on May 8 followed by a double-header at Rushford-Peterson on Friday the 10th. Weather permitting, a makeup Saturday home double header versus Chatfield at 10 a.m. will make it five games in four days

A home twin bill versus Southland follows on Monday, May 13.
