Aric Elton, a 2012 graduate of Spring Grove High School, and Ethan Murphy and Joshua Olerud, 2013 graduates of Spring Grove High School, are members of the 2013 Luther College football team.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D., the Luther College football team will face Presentation College for the season opener. The opening kickoff will mark the 100th season of varsity football at Luther.

Records show that football was started on an intercollegiate basis in 1892 and was a varsity sport until 1897, when games were returned to intramural status. Football was reintroduced in 1918 as a varsity sport and in 1919, Luther hired its first football coach.

Ninety-four years later, Luther's 13th head coach, Aaron Hafner, will begin his first full season as a collegiate head coach. Hafner takes over the Norse program after serving as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach the past seven years at William Penn University (Iowa).

Luther will begin its home schedule Saturday, Sept. 14, when it will host St. Olaf College at 1 p.m. in Carlson Stadium.
