Caledonia/Spring Grove senior golfer Devin Schiltz hit the links at The Ridges at Sand Creek (Jordan) on June 10-11. There were eight teams and 87 qualifiers at the two-day Class AA State Tourney where he competed as an individual.
Schiltz was the first C/SG male golfer to go to state in five years - since his older brother Isaac went to the big show in 2009.
Isaac, their parents, head coach Jeremy Leis, and teammate (and fellow all-conference player) Cody Breeser all attended the event with Devin who played 18 holes each day. He finished with a two-day total of 176 (86+90) taking 82nd place on the individuals' scoreboard.
Andrew Sederlund of Virginia/Mt. Iron-Buhl, Carter Haley of Mankato East, and Andrew Israelson of Staples-Motley tied for first, firing blistering totals of 144. Team bragging rights went to Providence Academy (Plymouth). Section 1AA champion Byron took eighth/last place.
"It was a good experience for him (Schiltz)," Leis said. "He played hard.
"Cody knows what he has to do now.... The level of play up there was incredible with some very good players who are really quite young. There were only two seniors among the top ten finishers.
"You really don't understand what it's like until you do it. That golf course is difficult, and the second day the greens got really fast....
"It was a great experience for all of us; and for me as a coach to get to go to the state tournament again. I'm very proud of Devin."
