The Spring Grove/Caledonia softball team opened play last Thursday, April 10 with a doubleheader split at Chatfield. The Saturday tournament at Onalaska Luther was not played due to weather and field conditions.

SG/C 302 110 0 - 7 8 4

CHS 001 002 0 - 3 9 3

Three straight hits got things rolling in the first for SG/C as the visitors took a 3-0 lead. Taylor Augedahl singled while Lottie Augedahl doubled and then pitcher Samantha Bratland stepped up for her first at-bat of the year, swatting a base-clearing home run.

An errant throw put Taylor on base again in the third, and Lottie singled. Both wound up scoring on a wild pitch, and SG/C led 5-0.

Chatfield rallied in the bottom of the inning when pitcher Sydney Irish singled and stole second, then trotted home via a pair of singles. But that was all the Gophers would get until the bottom of the sixth when they staged a two-run comeback featuring a double by Irish.

Chatfield actually out-hit SG/C 9-8 but stranded 10 base runners.

SG/C fell 4-0 in the nightcap as Chatfield senior pitcher Jennifer Hanson held the visitors to three hits scattered in three innings. Sophomore Sophia Augedahl went all seven innings for the Warriors.

Chatfield led off with three straight hits, a pair of singles and a double, to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The Gophers then added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth.

"I was really happy with our offensive production in game one, but the bats kind of went quiet in game two," SG/C coach Michelle Anderson said. "Both our pitchers did a great job in their first outings of the season. Our defense needs some more reps on regular infields but are coming along as well."

Anderson reported that both the SG/C junior high and B-teams won both games of the doubleheaders.
