The Spring Grove/Caledonia softball team faced four different foes while playing six games last week, four of them within 48 hours; making up earlier postponements, SG/C won 3 and dropped 3.

SG/C at Houston, May 7

SG/C 001 000 00 - 1 4 1

HOU 000 001 01 - 2 5 2

In a pitcher's duel, SG/C lost 2-1 in 8 innings. Fifteen stranded base runners didn't help the visitors from SG/C, and the offense was frequently caught looking at called third strikes, coach Michelle Anderson noted.

Samantha Bratland gave up only five hits, but two of them came in the eighth inning with the score tied 1-1. Abbey Loken got the win, walking 8 batters with only one run scoring.

It was the first non-conference clash between two former league rivals.

"It was a nice recovery from night before - our hitters were much more aggressive at bat and on the bases," Anderson said of her team's 14-1 thrashing of Plainview-Elgin-Millville (P-E-M) on the road.

Bratland tossed a 2-hitter in the 10-run-rule shortened game. The only score the Bulldogs had was a fourth-inning blast over the fence from senior infielder Courtney Ball.

For SG/C, Marie Doering got on base every time she stepped to the plate (three singles and a walk). Lauren Rusert went 3 for 4 including a first-inning triple. SG/C took a 12-0 lead after two innings on a good night for softball, 70 degrees and overcast.

The league-leading Gophers squeaked by for a 1-0 win in the first game of doubleheader played under miserable conditions (45 degrees and extremely windy) in Caledonia. Winning pitcher Sydney Irish led off the first, scoring the game's only run on a sacrifice.

Bratland struck out 9 and walked only 2 batters, but SG/C couldn't bring a run home, stranding 7. The home team had runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh while Irish finished strong, striking out the final two batters.

The home bats came out in the nightcap, as SG/C went on a 17-7 tear. Taylor Augedahl (2 for 5) led off a five-run second inning for SG/C. Four walks by Jennifer Hanson later brought two runners across.

Lottie Augedahl (2 for 3, double) finished with 4 runs batted in (RBI). Rusert (2 for 6) had 3 RBI, as did Doering. Alexy Bearbower went 3 for 4, getting on base four times and scoring twice.

Bratland struck out 10 in the freezing gale, only walking one batter.

Weather conditions had a lot to do with the 13-error total. SG/C scored 8 runs in the seventh inning, in spite of only tagging three singles. An error and four walks plagued the Gophers' defensive effort during that frame. It was the first conference loss for Chatfield (13-2, 11-1 TRC)
