With two of last year's three state-qualifiers back this season, plus a conference champ and four section qualifiers, the Caledonia/ Spring Grove (C/SG) girls are looking forward to a great year in track and field.

Junior Emma Lange is the reigning state high jump champion. She also was the section, sub-section and conference champion in the event.

She broke her own conference record (5 feet, 7 inches), then matched the section meet record of 5-7 and finally had a personal record of 5-8 while winning state.

Warrior head coach, Jim Westland, said that Lange had surgery and missed basketball season, but is expected back in May for track.

Junior Maria Fruechte was second in the long jump at the Three Rivers Conference (TRC) Meet and was the sub-section champion (15-9). She had a personal record of 17-1 while taking second at section - good to qualify for state where she finished 13th (15-3.25).

She was also the conference 100-meter dash champion, second at sub-section and third at section. Fruechte ran on the conference championship 4x100-meter relay, where the girls finished second at sub-section and sixth at section. Fruechte also ran on the 4x200-meter relay, which was second at TRC and third at sub-section.

Junior Remi Sonsalla ran on the TRC championship 4x100 relay. She finished fourth in the 200-meter dash at TRC.

Other section qualifiers include senior Michaela Neuzil (SG), who finished third in the 800-meter run at TRC, third at sub-section and sixth at section. She holds the Spring Grove school record in that event.

Neuzil, Laura Jergenson, Richell Mehus and Randi Mehus ran on the 4x800-meter relay team, which finished third at TRC, third at sub-section and ninth at section.

Senior Richell Mehus (SG) and junior Randi Mehus (SG) will compete mostly in distance events. "They're really good at that," Westland said.

Sophomore Heidi Buxengard (SG) placed fourth in pole vault at TRC, first at sub-section and ninth at section. She is second all-time in the C/SG record book at 8-5.

Junior Nikki Hansen (SG) also competed in pole vault, placing fourth at TRC. She was injured for sub-section and section meets, but is the C/SG record holder at 8-9.

Junior Hannah Russert also went to section. In the 300-meter hurdles, she placed third at TRC, third in sub-section and 10th in section meets.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Russert finished seventh at TRC, second at sub-section and 10th at section. In triple jump, she finished seventh at TRC, third at sub-section and 13th at section.

Other returning athletes who went to sub-section include junior Irene Abbott (1600M) along with freshman Samantha Colleran (400M), Lydia DeMorett (400M), Lauren Arneson (800M), Elizabeth Johnson (1600M), Brenna Werner (3200M) and Trece Frank (shot put).

The 2012 roster also includes senior Taylor Schulte; junior Alyssa Albert; sophomores Abagail Wruck, Aly Folz, Hannah Felten and Rebecca Roble; plus freshman Lindsay Hankins, Ella Pieper and Carrie Hagen.

Westland added that Folz (SG) is expected to compete in shot put and discus.

"We just want to compete and get better," he said. "Overall we're pretty even across the board..."

"I think we have a really good group," Westland concluded. "I try to teach them that if you work hard, that's how you have fun."
