Spring Grove (9-0, 7-0 SEC) hosted Lyle-Pacelli on Monday, Dec. 16 and Kingsland on the following night. The non-conference win over the Knights elevated the Lions into the Minnesota Basketball News Class A rankings at No. 10. On Dec. 19, SG hosted Schaeffer Academy.

SG vs. Lyle-Pacelli

Spring Grove won going away, 80-53 as Dustin Vickerman posted an extraordinary triple double while sophomore forward Brady Schuttemeier recorded a very strong 16-point, 17-rebound double double. That rebound total is the most since Aric Elton pulled down 18 four years ago.

Vickerman, a 6-foot-1 junior who has played both outside and inside this season, had 13 points while passing out a career-best 13 assists and matching a career-high 12 rebounds. His 13 assists are the most since Dakotah Rostad passed out 13 six seasons ago.

The leading scorer was Chase Grinde who put in 23 points despite sitting out at least a third of the game in foul trouble. He nailed 4 of 8 three-pointers and went 7 for 8 at the foul line.

Alex Engelhardt was a fourth Lion scoring in double figures with 13 points and 4 assists.

SG had its best night at the foul line thus far, hitting 24 of 34 (71%), more makes than L/P attempted (10 for 21, 48%).

Even though the L/P playing rotation included four players over 6-feet in height, SG also had a season-best rebounding margin of 30 with 47 boards to 17 for the Athletics.

The A's only lead came early at 2-1. The Lions appeared to be in control at 33-17 before L/P used a rare 6-point possession during an 8-point run.

The visitors trimmed a 43-31 halftime deficit down to eight points (47-39) before a 10-point SG run gave the Lions a double-digit lead they never lost. That sequence included two treys from Grinde and 4 points from Vickerman.

Junior Jordan Hart led L/P scoring with 17 points with sophomore Braden Kocer adding 15.

The A's dipped to 2-5 (2-4 SEC) while SG improved to 7-0 (6-0 SEC). The B-team Lions whipped L/P 50-14 with seventh grader Ethan Matzke scoring 10 points along with 7 rebounds.

SG vs. Kingsland

After a cold-shooting first half, the Lions hit the net over twice as well in the second period (54%) for a come-from-behind 62-54 win over the Knights.

KHS shot slightly better from 3-point range than from closer in. Overall, the Knights scored 50% from the field, a season high for Lion opponents.

But the Lions prevailed by getting to the foul line where they netted a season-high 74% (14 for 19). Also critical was limiting the Knights to only 4 free throw attempts (1 for 4). The Lions finished with a 13-point margin of free throws in an 8-point victory.

Kingsland outran SG 17-2 with fast breaks but could not control the Lions' dribble penetration, which scored 24 points.

SG had difficulty controlling Jake Rindels who recorded a game-high 24 points for Kingsland. The 6-foot junior guard scored on 4 dribble drives, found the net 3 times on fast breaks and hit 3 three-point baskets (3 for 4).

No other Knight managed more than 8 points, but three Lions scored in double figures. Engelhardt buried 4 of 6 trey attempts and hit all 6 free throws to finish with 22 points along with a team-best 6 assists. Grinde poured in 15 points and Schuttemeier 11.

Vickerman rebounded 7 times with 6 boards each from Grinde and Engelhardt as SG out-rebounded Kingsland 29 to 26.

The Lions were burned for 11 transition points after KHS defensive rebounds, but SG allowed the Knights only 1 offensive board.

SG trailed by 9 points before hitting 3 of 4 free throws to get back within 6 at halftime (31-25). The Lions eventually caught up at 37-all.

Down again 38-37, Grinde scored three times during a 10-point run as SG went up by 9. Soon after, the Knights scored 9 straight to lead 49-48 with 5:30 to play. SG replied with a 7-point spurt and would not be caught again.

Dylan Kampschroer hit a late 3-ball, and then Engelhardt sank 4 of 4 free throws in the final half minute.

KHS slipped to 2-7 while SG improved to 8-0. This first-ever meeting between the two teams will figure into postseason sub-section seeding as the Knights drop down from Class AA to join SG in the same Class A subsection.

A much younger Lion B-team saw a late rally fall short in a 46-38 loss to an all-sophomore Knight B-team. Brock Schuttemeier scored 12 points. SG won the eighth grade game 47-27 while KHS took the seventh grade game 33-24.

SG vs. Schaeffer Academy

Both teams shot well from the field, but with 12 fewer turnovers and 29 more rebounds, SG defeated SA 76-41.

Engelhardt had a 14-point, 13-rebound double along with a career-high 8 assists and no turnovers. Vickerman logged his second double double of the week with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Tanner Sanness was one basket shy with career-high totals of 8 points and 10 rebounds. Grinde scored a game-high 24 points.

The strong rebounding numbers were welcome as the team's leading rebounder, Brady Schuttemeier, missed about half of the game after 2 whistles in the first two minutes. But the sophomore had a productive second half with 8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and no fouls. He has had only one turnover in the past two games.

SG allowed the visitors only 4 offensive rebounds and outscored SA 21-0 in second chance points. The Lions had more offensive rebounds (22) than SA had total boards (18).

Senior Joseph Vaughan had half (9) of his team's rebounds and shared Schaeffer scoring honors with junior guard Zachary Sanger; each had 12 points.

SG scored the first 7 points while forcing 5 turnovers during Schaeffer's first 6 possessions.

Up 41-20 at halftime, the hosts had as many points at intermission as SA did all night. The Lions led 65-28 when the running-clock rule kicked in for the final nine minutes.

Schaeffer remained winless after 5 games (0-4 SEC) while state-ranked SG remained undefeated at 9-0 (7-0 SEC) heading into an always rigorous holiday schedule against one-loss Class AA Caledonia (6-1) and undefeated state-ranked No. 2 Rushford-Peterson.

The SG B-team improved to 5-3 with a 64-36 win over Schaeffer. B-team stats are online. The eighth graders (7-0) won 41-22, and the seventh graders earned their second win (score unavailable).
