Both the Caledonia/Spring Grove golf teams are coming off Three Rivers South Division championship seasons and begin 2013 with enough experience to expect success again.
The C/SG boys are looking forward to another great season after finishing 10-0 in Three Rivers Conference play and 34-22 overall.
Four starters return from last year's seven-letter-winner team. They include juniors Devin Schiltz, Sean Conner, Evan Welscher and sophomore Hunter Rud
Schiltz and Rud both made the All-TRC team last season. It was the second time Schiltz earned that honor. He finished the year ranked No. 4 in conference play and then won the TRC Tourney outright. At the sub-section tournament, he recorded the seventh-best round in a massive field of competitors.
Schiltz, Conner and Rud all advanced to the section tournament last year as individuals.
Rud posted the seventh-best set of scores in conference matches last season on the way towards All-TRC honors.
"Devin, Hunter, Sean and Evan have a lot of experience, and that should pay off at the end of the season," Coach Jeremy Leis said. With four of his top seven back, C/SG should be highly competitive in the conference and could well be a team to watch at section.
Leis said that Fillmore Central will provide some solid TRC competition once again this year. "We were fortunate to come out on top twice against them last year," he noted.
In 2012, the C/SG boys won the TRC South championship for the first time in four years. They finished third at TRC Tourney and fourth at sub-section.
With 25 straight conference championships, the C/SG girls are riding a staggering winning streak. Last year's team finished second at sub-section, advancing to the section tourney. They took third at that event and sent a senior player on to the state tournament. Sending either an individual or team to the state tourney is something the program has also accomplished for 25 consecutive years.
In 2012, C/SG finished 8-0 in conference play and 41-15 overall.
"We have eight returning letter winners," coach Jacquelyn Hauser reported last week. "We have a lot of girls with potential to compete for top spots, so all of the girls will push each other to improve."
Seniors Katie Meyer, Hannah Hendel and Claire Eglinton all lettered last season as did juniors Rachel Peterson, Kendra Prahl and Julianna Sand. Freshmen Ashley Gavin and Claudia Melde also earned letters.
Meyer returns as a natural to lead the squad after winning all-conference honors last season. She is one of three C/SG competitors (with Hendel and Gavin) who qualified for the 2012 section tourney. Meyer tied for eighth at that event, just a couple of strokes shy of reaching state.
This year's roster includes a healthy turnout for the ever-popular program. Besides the aforementioned letter winners, junior Karli Fishbaugher and sophomore Elizabeth Stoltz will tee it up along with freshman Nicole Krenzke, eighth-grader Stina Myrah and seventh-graders Katrina Paulson, Rebeckah Schroeder and Mariah Schieber.
Hauser said the team will be competing for another conference crown and may make a run in section play. Defending state Class A state champion Lewiston-Altura will be a team to watch in 2013 as will Stewartville, a team that advanced to the Class AA state tourney.
Both Hauser and Leis are in their second season as head coaches. Long-time coach Mitch Mullins will assist.
The start of the season will depend on course conditions. A few matches have already been rescheduled, but at press time, the April 5 matches versus Waukon were still on the schedule with the girls at home and the boys on the road.
The current slate has the girls at Valley High versus La Crescent on Monday, April 8 before a match at Stewartville on April 9.
