Warriors head to state in football, volleyball

Caledonia sends both the volleyball and football teams to the 2012 Class AA state tournament following section championship wins last weekend.
The football Warriors have won six straight section titles also winning four of the last five state championships (2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011) in addition to their first state crown in 1976. Caledonia (10-0) will be at state for a ninth time in program history and is ranked No. 1 in this year's final AP poll.
After defeating Chatfield 6-0 during an undefeated regular season, Caledonia blanked the Gophers 29-0 in the section finals after whitewashing Triton 53-0 in the semi-finals.
The Warriors face Sibley East (9-1) in the state quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 9 with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Burnsville High School
The volleyball Warriors (25-6) are at state for the first time. They were ranked No. 8 in the final Class AA coaches association poll and have already faced two of the other seven state qualifiers. They defeated Thief River Falls 2-0 and lost to defending state champion and state-ranked no. 1 Marshall 2-0.
The girls took all three sub-section matches in straight sets over Cotter, La Crescent and Chatfield before a 3-1 section title triumph over Kasson-Mantorville.
Caledonia will face unranked Maple Lake (19-11) in the Thursday, Nov. 8 state quarterfinals with the first serve at 7 p.m. in St. Paul at the Xcel Energy Center.
Representing Section One in Class A are both the volleyball girls and football boys from Faribault Bethlehem Academy. Grand Meadow heads to state in 9-man football.
