The Caledonia/Spring Grove B-team boys slipped to 0-5 with a rain-shortened three-inning 5-0 home loss to Chatfield. That followed a trio of losses the previous two weeks. A narrow 5-4 loss to Plainview-Elgin-Millville preceded a 20-2 setback versus St. Charles. C/SG came up on the short end of a 9-4 decision against Rushford-Peterson. This is a young team needing to borrow three eighth graders to complete the roster for each game.
The Spring Grove/Caledonia B-team girls have opened the softball season at 6-0 with wins over Chatfield twice 16-0 and 18-4 before dominating Plainview-Elgin-Millville 20-1. The girls then downed St. Charles 4-2 before sweeping a double header with Fillmore Central/Lanesboro 10-0 and 13-3. There was no game with Lewiston-Altura, which is not fielding a B-team this season.
Junior high softball
The SG/C eighth grade girls are 3-1 this spring. The season began with a 9-5 win over Chatfield followed by a 5-4 loss to Plainview-Elgin-Millville. SG/C then whipped St. Charles 13-3 and Fillmore Central/Lanesboro also 13-3.
The seventh grade squad has come out on top in all four contests. SG/C defeated Chatfield 6-1, P-E-M 5-3, St. Charles 2-0 and Fillmore Central/Lanesboro 4-0.
The junior high girls are coached by former Lion standout Bethany Bergsgaard.
Junior high baseball
The Caledonia/Spring Grove eighth grade team has a 5-1-1 record. The boys opened with a 3-0 win over Galesburg-Ettrick-Trempeleau and 6-0 loss to Chatfield. C/SG defeated La Crescent 6-3 and tied the Lancers 5-5 in the nightcap called due to darkness.
Next came an 8-0 shutout of Plainview-Elgin-Millville and a pair of payback wins against st. Charles 5-4 and 10-2.
The seventh grade boys are 6-1. C/SG opened with three wins including a 5-2 decision over G-E-T and an 8-3 victory versus Chatfield.
The boys scored 6 runs in a win over La Crescent (no score available for La Crescent) and then tallied 2 runs in the nightcap loss to the Lancers (no score available for La Crescent).
Next came a 3-1 win versus P-E-M, an 11-1 whipping of St. Charles and a 4-3 victory at Chatfield. The junior high boys are coached by Zach Hauser.
Three Spring Grove basketball teams played tournaments in Wisconsin Dells on April 26.
Varsity boys basketball
In an early-morning clash, the Lions fell to Hustisford, Wis. 56-45. A tall physical post player presented problems for the SG defense.
The next opponent was Wisconsin City, an AAU team, which defeated SG 51-40.
The Lions won the finale 50-40 against Winona Area Basketball Association, a team comprised mostly of players attending Winona Senior High.
The Lion lineup included Gabe Solum, Alex Engelhardt, Dylan Kampschroer, Dustin Vickerman, Elliott Cross, Brady Schuttemeier, Brock Schuttemeier, Tanner Sanness, Jordan Jaster and Devon Nerstad with coaching by Gary Cross and JC Nerstad.
Varsity girls basketball
The Lions led during all three games before falling each time by a narrow margin to AAU squads from Wisconsin. In an opening 23-20 loss, SG had led 17-7 at one time but scored only three points in the second half.
Next in a 28-20 setback, the opponent came from behind late with 3 three-point field goals.
In the third game, SG led by 5 points with about 2 minutes to play and by 3 points at the one-minute mark.
The Lions were overtaken in that final minute and missed four late free throws in a 38-36 loss. An offensive rebound put-back shot rimmed away at the buzzer.
Playing for SG were Kailee Bjerke, Samantha Bratland, Lauren Arneson, Elizabeth Johnson, Jordan Anderson, Kelsey Hermanson, Lauryn Bohr and Grace Edgington. The Lions were coached by Todd Olerud.
Junior high girls basketball
Three eighth graders and six seventh graders played in an eighth grade bracket. The Lions went 0-3 while overmatched physically versus larger players.
Playing for SG were Harley Gavin, Kyleigh Doering, Mariah Edgington, Kaitlyn Vickerman, Alyssa Johnson, Sydnie Kampschroer, Kaitlyn Gross, Kailee Olerud and Jadyn Olerud.
Other young Lion boys - Kai Bjerke, Alex Folz, Ethan Matzke, Noah Elton, Takoda Boyd and Caden Grinde - were also in action at Wisconsin Dells playing for three different La Crosse area AAU teams.
