Eight returning letter winners will lead the Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston cooperative boys soccer team onto the field this fall.
C/SG/H soccer boys from Spring Grove are from left Chris Lamm. Lance Hegge. Hank Hegge and Noah Myrah.
C/SG/H starters include senior goalkeeper (G) Nick Strabley, senior forward (F) Alex Marschall, and senior midfielders (M) Josh Nord, Devin Schiltz, Ben Pieper, and Justin Inglett. Junior Zach McGraw reprises his starting role at defender (D) as does sophomore Patrick Pinney.
Also returning to the squad and expected to start are sophomore Henry Russert at midfield and two freshmen midfielders, Andrew Marschall and Spring Grove's Noah Myrah. Myrah will also play in goal for the B-team.
Three other midfielders return from last year's team, including freshman Logan Larson and eighth graders Lance Hegge (SG) and Ryan Schroeder.
New to soccer this season are senior Aaron Goetting (M), SG senior Hank Hegge (D), junior Eli Ruesgen (M), sophomore Nathan Roble (M), sophomore Romesh Patel (M), SG eighth grader Chris Lamm (D) and seventh graders Alex Smith (D) and Seth Forrester (M).
This year, the squad has sufficient numbers to play a B team schedule. Many players are expected to see action in both varsity and B team matches.
The team posted a record of 1-10-1 in 2012. There is no conference. One of 17 teams in Section 1A last fall, C/SG/H fell in the first round to eventual state champion Rochester Lourdes. Coach Dustin Moburg said, "We would like to go farther in the playoffs this year." He is in his third year at the helm, his fifth year with the program.
Moburg said that the team's greatest challenge will be to achieve more scoring opportunities in the 18-yard box. The strongest assets are experience (eight of 13 top players return), communication, and teamwork.
"Wins are not as important as building student citizens," Moburg said. He stressed "working together to achieve a team result. If that is a win, that's fantastic."
The boys open with two home matches this week in Caledonia. They hosted a strong club from La Crosse Central on Aug. 26 after the Herald went to press and welcome Winona Cotter on Thursday, Aug. 27.
