Both the Caledonia/Spring Grove boys and girls golf teams squeezed in their last conference match versus Kingsland last week with the girls as conference champions for the 26th consecutive season. Both teams headed off to sub-section play in Winona on May 24 just as the Herald was heading to press.

Drew Stemper was meet medalist for the gents, completing nine holes at Caledonia's MaCal Grove (par 36) in 40 strokes. Teammate Evan Welscher shot 41 while Devin Schiltz brought in a 42. Hunter Rud recorded the fourth varsity round at 47. Sean Conner and Cody Breeser also played for the varsity.

As a team, C/SG defeated Kingsland 170-250.

For the ladies (par 38), the Warriors won with a team total of 219 at the same venue. Kingsland did not field enough players to post a team score, but Knight Karli Bly did take meet medalist honors with the low round of the afternoon, shooting a 47.

Warrior Katie Meyer shot 49. Hannah Hendel brought in a 53, while Ashley Gavin shot 58. Julie Sand and Claudia Melde tied for the fourth varsity score at 59. Claire Eglinton also played on the varsity round.

Keeping track of golf standings in the conference became confusing this year due to many postponements, C/SG girls coach Jacquelyn Hauser explained.

"With this win, we clinched the South Division of the Three Rivers Conference," she said. "With the crazy spring that we have had, they shortened the season. So the first time we met a conference team, it counted towards the conference standings.

"The conference tournament counted as the second meeting with each team. With that format we ended up being 8-0 in the conference."

Both squads traveled to the sub-section tournament at The Bridges in Winona on Friday, May 23. Results were not yet available as this issue went to press, but will be included in next week's Herald.

For those teams and individuals that qualify, the Section 1AA Championship Tournament is at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester on May 29.
