The Caledonia/Spring Grove boys golf team (3-1, 2-0 TRC) hosted three meets at Ma Cal Grove last week, playing Southland on Monday, Chatfield and La Crescent on Tuesday and Waukon on Friday. All three meets featured mild weather and windy conditions.

C/SG vs. Southland, April 7

C/SG defeated Southland 180-224 in the first meet of the year. The Rebels also compete in the Three River Conference South Division.

Senior Devin Schlitz successfully defended the home turf, medaling with a round of 43. Sophomore Cody Breeser shot 44 while juniors Drew Stemper and Hunter Rud turned in rounds of 46 and 47, respectively. Senior Isaak Solum and sophomore Symon Ely also played on the varsity round.

Coach Jeremy Lies said that the meet came as a surprise, since the course was not expected to be open yet. "Many of my players had not hit a ball outside yet this season," he noted. "They did a really nice job."

C/SG vs. La Crescent, Chatfield, April 8

The following day in a double dual, C/SG topped Chatfield in a conference match but lost to non-conference La Crescent at the same venue. The Lancers turned in a very respectable 177 on the nine-hole, par-36 course, followed by 191 from the Warriors and 259 from the Gophers.

Stemper shot 45, while Schiltz took a 46. Breeser came in at 49, and Ely rounded out the varsity scorebook with a 51. Solum (58) and freshman Carson Bullerman (59) also played varsity.

John Wilson of La Crescent was the meet medalist with a score of 41.

"We have to keep our heads down and work hard and focus on the process of getting better every day," Leis said. "(We are) trying to build our games. Our short games need practice, and we will get many opportunities to get better in the next six weeks. I like our attitude in practice. So far we are going to work on focusing. It's a marathon, and we want to gradually get better, not burn ourselves up early.

C/SG vs. Waukon, April 11

The Warriors defeated the Indians on a very windy Friday afternoon, 183-212.

Schiltz medaled with a score of 43, followed by Stemper at 45, Ely at 47, and Breeser at 48. Solum (57) and Bullerman (60) rounded out the varsity for C/SG.

The Herald was able to obtain some JV scores for the meet as well. Cole Konkel, Zach Sanness, and Riley Johnson had excellent rounds of 52. Rodney Tweito shot a 54, and Larry Schulte 58. Mick Bullerman came in at 65. Team score: 210.

"It was a great week getting outside," Leis noted. "I'd like to thank Ma Cal Grove for all their hard work in getting the course ready and letting us enjoy it."
