Gymnasts battle flu, injuries on way to section meet

On Jan. 24, the Caledonia/ Spring Grove/Houston co-op gymnastics program hosted Byron/Lourdes.

The Warriors recorded 122.05 varsity points while Byron/Lourdes finished with 129.7. In JV events, Warrior gymnasts earned 80.05 points while the Bears saw 121.35.
Warrior coach Jackie Johnson said some of her gymnasts are suffering from shin splints, aches and pains. The flu is also a problem.
"We did stay in the 120s again, but it is time for the girls to start working harder and get ready for the Section meet that is right around the corner," she cautioned.
Warriors Kaylee Cavanaugh and Sierra Hunter finished in a first-place tie on uneven parallel bars, posting identical scores of 7.850. On the floor routine, the pair finished 2-3 with Cavanaugh taking 8.35 points and Hunter earning 8.225. Balance beam had Cavanaugh in fourth with 7.75 and Hunter sixth at 7.30.
Tara Solberg (6.850), Skylar Schoh (5.950) and Abby Hoskins (5.750) also competed for the varsity on bars.
On balance beam, Emily Hahn and Solberg brought in identical scores of 6.85. Hoskins scored 6.80.
The floor also featured Solberg scoring 8.10, Hoskins 6.975 and Hahn 6.25.
Vault found Solberg in a tie for second place with an 8.375, Cavanaugh in third at 8.325, Hoskins in a tie for fourth (8.250), and Hunter taking fifth with 8.20 points.
Overall gymnast was the Bears' Annika Carlson with a total of 33.550 points. Cavanaugh tallied 32.275, which was good for second. Hunter (31.575) and Solberg (30.175) finished fourth and seventh, respectively. Hoskins took eighth at 27.750.
Junior varsity scores included four Warriors on bars. Hahn earned a 5.550, Salome Hagelstein 5.40, Alisa Peterson 3.95 and Cayla Schleich 3.80.
On balance beam, Schleich took 4.90 followed by Kerrigan Scanlan (3.90), Savanna Swindell (3.40), Mikki Boyd (3.10), Michaela Kasten (2.60) and Claire Bratland (1.90).
The floor featured Hagelstein at 6.45, Becca Roble at 6.10, Cassidy Bauer and Scanlan at 5.85, Vendela Parker at 4.5, Mackenzie Wolter at 3.85 and Peterson at 2.0.
On vault, Hahn scored 7.95, followed by Hagelstein (6.95) and Peterson (6.90).
The Warriors were scheduled for a meet in Stewartville on Jan. 29 and then host Holmen, Wis., on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The latter meet will be Parents and Senior night. The section meet will be at Byron on Saturday, Feb. 16.
