On Jan. 21, Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston gymnasts took on the talented team from Byron/Lourdes. The Bears hosted and won the meet, 134.4-124.88.

Standout all-around performer Kaylee Cavanaugh was only able to compete on one varsity station - uneven bars - due to an ankle injury sustained at the Holmen tournament five days earlier. But teammates Emily Hahn and Jessilyn Knutson stepped up to the plate, filling out the rest of the Warrior's varsity slate.

C/SG/H coach Jackie Johnson noted that her team still managed to maintain their average score. As a matter of fact, the Warriors topped an earlier performance turned in at the Byron/Lourdes Tournament in December when they hit 121.4.

"Byron is a solid team," she said, "and they are stacked quite well with their JV scoring 120 points." The Warrior JV team totaled 87.05.

Cavanaugh's 8.08 was the top Warrior score on bars, which was swept by a trio of Bears led by Stephanie Bellrichard (8.33). Sierra Hunter earned a 7.8, while Abby Hoskins had a 7.73.

Emma Weatherly of B/L took first on balance beam (8.9). Hahn was second, with a solid 7.85. Tara Solberg took fourth (7.73), while Hunter scored 7.43 points, earning 7th place.

On vault, Weatherly again got the top score (8.8), followed closely by three teammates. Solberg took 5th with an 8.5. Hunter was right behind at 8.43.

Floor exercise was won by Taylor Knesel of Byron. Three teammates followed. Hunter finished 5th at 8.4, while Solberg took 7th with a score of 7.95. Knutson turned in a 7.63 on the event.

In all-around gymnast totals, Weatherly was first at 34.23, followed by Bellrichard (33.8). Hunter was third at 32.05, followed by Solberg (31.05) and Hoskins (29.13).

In the JV rounds, Knutson took fourth on vault (8.15). Hahn also earned fourth on bars (5.3), and 5th on floor (7.8). Teammate Alissa Peterson took 6th on beam (6.4).

This week

Weather permitting, the Warriors (4-3 duals) hosted Pine Island on Jan. 28. Two nights later on Thursday, Jan. 30, Stewartville visits for the final regular season meet. That date will also be senior night and parents night in Caledonia. Solberg and Hahn are both members of the senior class.

The varsity team then gets a couple of weeks to tune up for the Section 1A Tournament at Simley High (Inver Grove Heights) on Feb. 15.
