Spring Grove defenders smothered LeRoy-Ostrander on both Friday and Saturday in a weather-delayed two-day football game. After a lightning delay lasted over an hour on Friday night, the game was postponed until Saturday with SG up 34-0 and 8:55 remaining in the second quarter.

When play resumed, the Lions picked up where they left off en route to a 60-20 plastering of the Cardinals, their third 60-or-better-point total in three weeks.

Long-time officials at both Spring Grove, Mabel-Canton and Lanesboro could not recall any previous varsity football games that had to be delayed overnight due to weather. In fact, all four SEC games were interrupted and postponed at least a day including Lanesboro's win over state-ranked No. 3 Grand Meadow.

The win left state-ranked No. 6 SG alone atop the conference standings going into this week's long-anticipated showdown at GM.

Spring Grove defenders caught more L-O passes than did Cardinal receivers.

The Lions scored with 2 interceptions and set up 2 additional touchdowns with a third interception and a fumble return. L-O quarterback Jace Bunne, often facing a severe pass rush (3 sacks), completed only 2 of 16 passes for 28 yards while being intercepted 4 times.

Damon Cody picked off two Bunne passes, returning the second 50 yards for a touchdown. The freshman cornerback had returned his first pick 8 yards to the Cardinal 11, setting up the second SG touchdown. Junior safety Dustin Vickerman snagged another long L-O pass at full stride just before going out of bounds.

There were 6 Cardinal turnovers overall, including fumble recoveries by Alex Engelhardt and Mikal Guberud.

The Lions gave up three turnovers, losing the ball while muffing both a punt and a kickoff in addition to losing a fumble at the Cardinal 18.

On the first Cardinal turnover, Brady Schuttemeier knocked the ball loose from the grasp of Bunne in the backfield, and Engelhardt scooped up the fumble. He returned it 18 yards to the Cardinal 6, which set up the Lions' first TD.

>Schuttemeier had 14 tackles including 3 for loss with one sack.

Spring Grove (6-0, 5-0 SEC) went on to score on 7 of 8 possessions to lead 48-0 at halftime. The two interception scores made it 60-0 in the third quarter.

Caleb Happel (15 carries, 83 yards) scored 4 touchdowns with runs of 12, 2, 11 and 2 yards.

Matt Schleich (10 carries, 86 yards) was the leading rusher but scored while catching 2 SG passes and one L-O toss. He caught an 8-yard TD pass and returned an interception (first tipped by Dylan Kampschroer) 16 yards to the end zone. The senior running back/linebacker also caught a two-point conversion pass and kicked another extra point.

Keenan Siminski threw only 8 passes but four of his 6 completions resulted in scores. In addition to the TD and PAT completions to Schleich, the junior quarterback had TD tosses to both tight ends - Engelhardt for 44 yards and Schuttemeier for 20 yards.

Engelhardt ended up with 3 receptions netting 78 yards. Siminski suffered one sack but was not intercepted while passing for 109 yards.

The Cardinals (2-4, 1-4 SEC) had no success against the Lion starting defense, going backwards during 6 of their first 11 possessions. The visitors gained 177 of their 211 total yards while scoring three times in the final 10 minutes of mercy-rule running time against Lion reserves.

There were only 14 Cards in uniform, so L-O had no second team.

Nate Bunne scored on a 44-yard run while Jace Bunne scored on 12 and 20-yard runs, the latter on the final play of the game.

SG totaled 250 yards on the ground and 109 in the air, out-gaining L-O overall 359 yards to 211.

There was no B-team game. The SG/M-C/NW junior high boys rolled past Central of Elkader (Iowa) 42-12

Up Next: After Friday's trip to Grand Meadow, Spring Grove will wrap up regular season play at home versus Mabel-Canton on Wednesday, October 16.
