Autumn playoff runs have come to a close for Spring Grove athletes in all four sports.

The Caledonia/SG/Houston girls soccer team closed at 5-8-1 with an overtime playoff match. The soccer boys finished at 2-10.

The Spring Grove volleyball team finished with a record of 19-11, the Lions' fourth straight winning campaign and the fifth consecutive season as SEC East runners-up to a perennially state-ranked team.

An early season tournament win against Waukon was the 250th career victory for veteran mentor Michelle Anderson.

The girls won their first sub-section game before bowing out with a valiant performance against state-ranked No. 2 Fillmore Central.

State-ranked as high as No. 5, the SG football boys, finished at 9-2 and are conference co-champions along with Grand Meadow and Lanesboro - an unprecedented fourth straight season the Lions have won or shared the league title.

Their impressive 21-game conference winning streak ended in week seven. SG has dropped only 2 conference games during the past 4 seasons.

After a state-tournament appearance in 2011, the Lion gridders for the second straight season made it to the doorstep of the state tourney as a section finalist. Complete coverage of last weekend's championship game may be found on the sports page of this edition.
