Lion boys receive top seed, girls opened with eighth seed

The Spring Grove boys, for the second straight year, entered this week's section football tournament with the top seed while the Lion girls opened sub-section volleyball play with the No. 8 seed.

On Oct. 21, the Lion ladies hosted and defeated No. 9 seed Hope Lutheran 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-15). The Patriots finished the season with an 11-13 record.
SG improved to 19-10 and advance to an Oct. 24 sub-section 7 p.m. quarterfinal at Harmony against not only the top tournament seed but also the top-ranked Class A team in the state, Fillmore Central (29-2).
The Falcons had a first-round bye as did No, 2 Mabel-Canton, No. 3 Goodhue and No. 4 Wabasha-Kellogg
There were no upsets in the first round with higher seeds taking all four matches.

The football seeding was determined by computer. SG (7-1) ranked above the other two SEC co-champions (Lanesboro and Grand Meadow) by virtue of Mabel-Canton's win over Houston.
All section playoff games are rematches as the section is the same as the conference. The winners of the Oct. 22 quarterfinal games advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, Oct. 26 with the higher seed hosting at 7 p.m.
For the first time, the state high school league requires section championship games be played on artificial turf. This year's final is on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. with the site yet to be announced

The Sub-section 1A East Volleyball Tournament opened earlier this week when No. 8 seed Spring Grove (18-10) hosted a rematch with No. 9 Hope Lutheran (11-12).
The winner advances to the Thursday, Oct. 24 quarterfinal at Harmony versus top seed Fillmore Central. The Falcons (29-2) received a first-round bye and are ranked No. 1 in the state in the Class A coaches poll.
The ensuing semi-finals are at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Mabel-Canton (31-2) is also state ranked at No. 7 and received the No. 2 sub-section seed and a first-round bye as did No. 3 Goodhue and No. 4 Wabasha-Kellogg.
