The Lions traveled to Houston on Friday, Jan. 3, demolishing the Hurricanes 64-19.

Four SG girls scored in double figures with Samantha Bratland one steal short of a triple double as the Lions humbled the home team on Parents Night.

Nicki Ellingson had a 14-point, 11-rebound double double along with a team-high 5 assists and 4 steals.

Bratland logged 10 points, 13 rebounds, 9 steals and 3 assists. Senior forward Aly Folz got a career-high 13 points and took 3 charges - her best all-around game according to coach Russell Larson.

Junior center Kailee Bjerke also scored a career-best 12 points. Sophomore Jordan Anderson took her first starting assignment (in place of injured guard Julianna Sand) and scored 9 points.

Freshman guard Grace Edgington scored her first varsity points with a late three-point field goal with an assist from Folz.

Five Lions had more assists than turnovers, but 20 turnovers were more than the Lions desired.

Spring Grove's 28 free throws were the second most attempts of the season, but the girls hit only 12 (43%).

However, the SG defense dominated the game, lifting 22 steals and allowing Houston only four trips to the foul line where the 'Canes hit 3 of 6 free throws.

It was the third time in the teams' last seven meetings that SG held Houston to fewer than 20 points. The Hurricanes, also without a usual starter, did not hit a bucket in the second half. Down 40-16 at halftime, Houston added only 3 free throws by Elizabeth Loken.

Two-time All-SEC 6-foot senior Abbey Loken led the 'Canes with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Missing all 22 shots in the second half, Houston shot only 15% from the field overall. Facing a Lion full-court defense for most of the first half, Houston ball handlers already had 20 turnovers before halftime.

SG dropped back into a half-court defense prior to halftime, but still came up with steals. After a mercy-rule running-clock second half, Houston had lost possession 38 times overall.

The Lions (7-2, 6-0 SEC) extended their conference winning streak to 78 games. Houston slipped below .500 for the season at 4-5 (3-3 SEC).

Kelsey Hermanson had 21-point, 14-rebound double double along with 8 steals as the Lion B-team (4-4) won 47-28. B-team stats from the last three games are below.

SG also took the eighth grade game 39-10. Houston did not have enough players for a complete seventh grade contest.
