The Ben Niggle Sports Complex in Rushford saw plenty of action on April 25 as track and field teams from Cotter, Caledonia/Spring Grove, Rushford-Peterson/ Houston and Lanesboro/Fillmore Central/Mabel-Canton competed.
Ally Beardmore (fifth from the left) crosses the finish line just ahead of C/SG teammate Maria Fruechte in this 100-meter dash heat at the La Crescent Booster Club Invitational. In the finals, Beardmore and Fruechte would finish first and third.
April 26 saw the girls and the boys competing in a non-scored meet at Earl Seaton Field in La Crescent, which featured competitors from four Minnesota and three Wisconsin programs.
R-P/H track meet
Eighteen events were scored, but equipment problems resulted in no official results for the 100-meter dash events for both the boys and girls competitors.
R-P/H finished first in girls team points (77) followed by Cotter (74), L/FC/M-C (64) and C/SG (57).
In boys competition, Cotter was first (87), L/FC/M-C second (74.5), R-P/H third (62) and C/SG fourth (45.50).
In girls events, C/SG had four individual first-place finishes.
Hannah Russert won both the 100-meter (17.45 seconds) and 300-meter (51.04) hurdles. She also finished second in triple jump (31-feet, 8.5 inches).
Russert also ran on the second-place 4x200-meter relay along with Lydia DeMorett, Tracy Felton and Sierra Olinger. Russert's 17 points placed her as the leading scorer for the C/SG girls.
Emma Lange won the high jump at 5-05. Aly Folz won the shot put with a throw of 33-07 and took fourth in discus.
The team of Ally Beardmore, Josephine Wagner, Samantha Colleran and Felton took second in the 4x100M relay.
In all, 13 girls scored team points, ranging from first through fifth places.
The team of DeMorett, Wagner, Colleran and Irene Abbott took third in the 4x400M relay.
Nikki Hanson took third in pole vault (7-09). Beardmore was third in the 200M dash while Abbott ran third at 400 meters.
The boys turned in two individual first place finishes and one relay win.
The best event for C/SG was the 200M dash won by Ryan Pitts (23.76) while Sam Schulte took third and Jacob Nielsen fourth.
The team of Pitts, Adam Buttell, Alex Goetzinger and Schulte won the 4x100M relay in 45.95.
West Spier won the high jump at 5-10.
The 4x200M relay team of Goetzinger, Nielsen, Mitchell Anderson, and Buttell took third. The 4x400M team of Spier, Alex Varney, Case McCormick and Alex Marschall also finished third.
No points were awarded for the "unofficial" 100M dash winners, but C/SG probably would have added to their tallies had the race been scored. Beardmore, Pitts and Nielsen of all appeared to have outstanding finishes.
La Crescent Booster Invitational
This non-scored meet saw Pitts break a meet record that had stood for 14 years in the 100M dash when he crossed the line in 11.20 in his preliminary heat. It was a new personal record for the junior sprinter. Pitts went on to win the final in 11.39. He also won the 200M dash with a time of 24.19.
Spier beat all comers in the high jump at 6-01.
Russert had two first place finishes, winning the 100M hurdles (17.11) and the triple jump (32-02.75). She took third in the 300M hurdles.
Beardmore won her preliminary heat of the 100M dash (13.72) and also the finals (13.80).
Lange again won the high jump at 5-03.
Other outstanding performances included a second place shot put by Folz (34-00.50). Maria Fruechte took second in the 100M prelims and a third in the finals. Alexis King tied for second in high jump (4-07). The team of Schulte, Goetzinger, Pitts and Buttell took second in the 4x100 relay.
Hanson took third in pole vault. Beardmore finished third in the 200M dash.
The boys and girls track teams were scheduled to compete again at La Crescent on Friday, May 3.
