In the September 6 conference opener for both squads, host Spring Grove surprised an excellent Lanesboro football team, 42-14.

The Lions (2-0, 1-0 SEC) scored first when an errant punt snap provided them with great field position on the LHS 28. Six plays later, SG quarterback Keenan Siminski bolted 11 yards for the first score of the game, capped by a Caleb Happel point-after-touchdown (PAT) run.

Early in the second quarter, Tanner Sanness, Nick Holty and Brady Schuttemeier opened a hole for Happel who raced 46 yards for a touchdown. Happel's second extra-point run made it 16-0.

Lanesboro (1-1, 0-1 SEC) answered two possessions later with a 9-play, 63-yard drive. Niko Anderson provided the first score for LHS when he broke three tackles on a 14-yard touchdown run and then ran for the PAT. The Burros were back in contention at 16-8 a minute and a half before halftime.

That's when a spectacular one-handed 80-yard touchdown grab by Spring Grove's Dustin Vickerman stunned everyone. Siminski aired a perfect strike to his junior wide receiver, who, sandwiched between a Burro defender and the sideline, made a one-handed catch at full speed. The ball was in the air for 35 yards and in Vickerman's grasp for the final 45. It was suddenly 22-8.

Two plays later, Lion freshman Damon Cody forced a fumble recovered by Vickerman on the Burro 26 with 1:04 seconds to go before halftime. It would be the only turnover of the game.

On a fourth-down, Harrison Speltz plunged 6 yards into the end zone and then added an extra-point run. In a minute and a half, a one-score spread had become a 30-8 halftime count.

Matt Schleich (136 yards) took only five handoffs, but back-to-back touchdown sprints put the game away for the Lions in the third quarter. Speltz and Alex Engelhardt blocks launched the senior halfback's first TD, a 75-yard gallop. On the Lions' next play from scrimmage, Schleich stormed past a Holty block untouched for 58 yards.

Happel rushed for 192 yards for SG while the Lion defense limited Burro two-time SEC Back of the Year Anderson to 89 yards.

In the fourth quarter, Lanesboro capped a 58-yard drive when quarterback Garrett Boggs perfectly executed a fake before racing outside for a 25 yard TD. That ended the scoring.

Siminski had two passes dropped but still completed 3 of 8 for 99 yards and a touchdown, all to Vickerman. Both juniors were enjoying their second varsity start.

The Burros had only 19 yards through the air on 2 completions. SG added 408 yards on the ground to outgain LHS overall 507 to 210.

The Lion defense was led by Happel with 15 tackles and Schuttemeier who had 14 stops including 3 tackles for loss (2 solo, 1 assist). There were also solo tackles for loss by Schleich, Larry Schulte and Dylan Kampschroer.

SG has won four straight in this series, which is now tied with 21 wins, 21 losses and 3 ties for each team since 1942.

The Lion B-team snapped an 11-year, 11-game losing streak against Lanesboro, blanking the Burros 24-0. The SG/M-C/North Winn junior high boys defeated Lanesboro 40-13
