For soccer players from Caledonia, Spring Grove and Houston, five matches last week brought mixed results. The boys team went 0-2, while the ladies finished 2-1.

Boys vs. La Crescent, Monday, Sept. 9

The visitors from La Crescent prevailed 3-0 in varsity play, while the Caledonia JV team was out-scored 4-0.

After battling to a scoreless first half, C/SG/H was overtaken by a pair of goals from senior midfielder Jacob Fritz and a single score by classmate and fellow mid Ben Lassig.

"We played our game during the first half - steady, even pressure with good marking," C/SG/H coach Dustin Moburg said. The Lancers finally "made some good triangles to put the ball back in the net," after the break. Fritz also got credit for what the coaches termed an amazing "golazo" goal.

C/SG/H goaltender Nick Strabley was outstanding, facing down 24 shots. The home team took only one-fourth as many shots.

"We played well, and our team work and formation is improving," Moburg concluded.

Boys at P-E-M/D-E, Saturday, Sept. 14

The cooperative team made up of Plainview-Elgin-Millville and Dover Eyota defeated C/SG/H 9-0 five days later. Strabley had 20 saves defending 29 shots, but C/SG/H was held scoreless in five tries (2 by Alex Marschall and 1 by Devin Schiltz).

P-E-M/D-E was led by Riley Mickow with 2 goals. Goaltender Cole Martin had 1 save.

"P-E-M(/D-E) had some good crosses and heading opportunities in the 6-yard box," Moburg noted. "We need to keep the formation and look for the open pass."

There was no JV match.

Girls at St. Charles, Tuesday, Sept. 10

Last week, the ladies from C/SG/H shut out St. Charles 5-0 on the road. Trece Frank had 2 goals while Ali Beardmore, Hannah Felten, and Elizabeth Stoltz scored one apiece. Stoltz also contributed an assist. Tressa King and Alison Goergen each had 2 assists.. C/SG/H put 12 shots on goal.

Lauren Perry served as Warrior goaltender in the first half, with two stops to her credit. In the second period Olivia Schmitz took over, adding 3 saves.

Girls vs. Dover-Eyota, Thursday, Sept. 12

C/SG/H won at home two days later, defeating D-E 2-1 in overtime. "We were pretty evenly matched," Warrior coach Tim Colleran said. "I think we did a good job of controlling the ball, which helped our efforts."

Beardmore scored in first half of regulation play, but the Eagles answered just before halftime with a goal by freshman Ashlee Olson. The second period was a scoreless defensive struggle.

Colleran said that Stoltz scored on a corner kick in the first five minute overtime, and C/SG/H held off D-E in the second overtime for the win.

Girls vs. La Crescent, Saturday, Sept. 14

Lancer Brielle Bierman scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists for the visitors from La Crescent on Saturday, leading her team to a 10-2 victory over C/SG/H.

Trece Frank and Ali Beardmore each provided a goal for the Warriors.

Colleran said the Lancers came out hot, scoring almost immediately. They took a 9-1 lead at the half, but Caledonia matched the visitors 1-1 in the second period.

"The girls are working hard, playing hard," Colleran said. "We're doing a lot better job of controlling the ball. Our passing and communications are also getting better with every match."

The girls' team hosts P-E-M on Tuesday, September 17. Their next match is a week later when the team travels to Winona Cotter.

For the boys squad, a trip to Cotter occurs on Sept. 17, followed by a home match versus P-E-M/D-E two days later.
