Five games in as many days kept the Spring Grove/Caledonia softball team occupied last week. SG/C (14-1) swept the competition earning a No. 1 seed in this week's sub-section tournament. The girls also hold the No. 9 spot in state polls and are now the outright Three Rivers Conference South champions.

SG/C bats kept runners on the base paths and crossing home plate in all but the first inning of Monday's 10-1 opening doubleheader game.

Winning pitcher Samantha Bratland went 3 for 4 at the plate including a double and a triple while striking out 15 on defense. With 78 strikes and only 23 balls, she never issued a walk.

Sophia Augedahl went 3 for 4, tripling and scoring in the fourth inning and driving in a pair of runs in the sixth.

Lauren Rusert went 2 for 3 with an RBI (run batted in) as did Jordan Anderson.

SG/C exploded for 10 runs in the second frame as the "hosts" from GMLOK were swamped 17-2.

Bulldog leadoff hitter Courtney Schmidt singled and scored on a Jamie Stevens double in the first, but GMLOK stranded two and was never able to keep pace with the "visitors," who were still playing on their home field.

Lottie Augedahl went 3 for 3 for SG/C including a triple and 3 RBIs. Marie Doering hit 3 for 5, while Bratland smacked a pair of doubles.

Emily Ranzenberger went 2 for 3 including a two bagger. Rusert collected 3 RBIs on a second-inning single and a ground ball in the fourth.

Allowing only 3 hits, Sophia Augedahl got the pitching win in the run-rule shortened contest striking out four while walking one.

SG/C blanked the Trojans 10-0 in the opening round of a doubleheader at Spring Grove on Thursday.

Lottie Augedahl hit a home run on her first trip to the plate then tripled in the fourth for a second RBI.

Anderson went 3 for 3 including a double and drove in 2 RBI. Taylor Augedahl also got 2 RBI while hitting 2 for 3.

Rushford Peterson led off with a base hit and had runners on second and third with two out in the first inning, but wound up stranding both when Bratland recorded strike out number three. She fanned 13 before the 10 run-rule brought the two-hitter to a close while only walking one.

After falling behind 9-2, the Trojans staged a six-run comeback in the 11-8 nightcap. SG/C provided some help, giving up an uncharacteristic five errors while RP made none.

McKenzie Denstad got SG/C on the board first with an RBI triple in the second. The hit parade continued in the third with a pair of doubles (Lottie Augedahl, Anderson), a triple (Bratland), and three more runs.

The fifth inning featured 5 more runs based on three singles (Doering, Lottie Augedahl, and Rusert) and a pair of walks. Bratland then capped it off in style with a 2 RBI home run in the sixth.

Haley Miller reached base for R-P on a third-inning error and trotted home when Keela Brand homered.

Three singles clumped in the sixth plus a double brought R-P three runs closer as did a hit batter, error, and three singles in the final inning. But the Trojans still fell short 11-8.

Bratland struck out 10 with only one walk in Friday's 2-hitter as SG/C shut out the Lancers 3-0.

The teams were scoreless until the bottom of the third when singles by Alexy Bearbower and Doering set up an RBI double by Lottie Augedahl.

Rusert, Sophia Augedahl and Taylor Augedahl put together singles in the next frame for another run, and then Sophia drove in an insurance run in the sixth via a double.

Subsection 1AA East action began Monday, May 19 when top seed C/SG annihilated No. 8 Lake City 34-0 in Caledonia just as the Herald was going to press.

The second round No. 5 GMLOK is scheduled for the May 21 at Caledonia. On Friday, the action shifts to St. Charles. With the exception of round one, the tourney is double elimination.
