The high school girls opened their four-week summer league slate last Wednesday at Winona State University. The Lions won 2 of 3 sets versus Cochrane-Fountain City before falling to a highly-regarded Fillmore Central squad.
Each team plays two matches a night, each consisting of three sets no matter who wins the first two. There are four courts going with eight teams every hour starting at 5 p.m. with the last matches at 9.
Eleven Lionesses were in action last week including seniors Tara Solberg. Nicki Ellingson, Heidi Buxengard and Sammi Boyd. Aly Folz was unavailable due to preparations for the state track meet.
Junior netters were Lauren Arneson, Elizabeth Johnson, Carrie Hagen, Samantha Bratland and Kailee Bjerke along with sophomores Sierra Hunter and Jordan Anderson.
The following teams opened their summer seasons this week after the Herald went to press. Look for coverage next week.
The summer league season at Viterbo University for the varsity girls began with two games on June 11.
Both the varsity and B-team boys will again play summer league on Tuesday nights at La Crosse Central High School. This year a team of younger Lions will also participate in the same league. Each team plays one game a night.
LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL
These Lions again will play a Tuesday and Friday league schedule that began Tuesday at New Albin, Iowa, with the home opener on Flag Day this Friday, June 14, versus Mabel-Canton.
The Lions host Houston on Tuesday, June 18. The league game begins at 9 a.m. followed by a non-league second game.
