Two state qualifiers return for track boys

The Caledonia/Spring Grove boys track team lost two key seniors to graduation and two underclassmen to transfer but still bring back two of five state qualifiers in 2013.
Junior West Spier holds the Caledonia school record high jump of 6 feet, 3 inches and is the reigning conference and sub-section high jump champion. He went on to take second at section and won the ninth place medal at state.
Junior Ryan Pitts was a member of the 4x200-meter relay that won both the conference and sub-section championships and went on to run second at section and bring home the 8th place medals at state.
At sub-section, Pitts ran second in the 100M dash and fourth in the 200. He followed that with another 100M fourth place at section.
Nine other athletes also return from last year's sub-section roster including four sprinters - seniors Sean Kearney and Shane Sheehan along with juniors Adam Buttell and Alex Goetzinger. Sheehan also long jumped.
Also competing at sub-section were junior distance runner Alex Marshall and junior hurdler Phillip Paulson. Junior Mitchell Anderson (from Spring Grove) went to sub-section as a long jumper. Junior throwers Bryan Barthel and Mason Ashbacher also represented the team at the sub-section meet.
Others who drew some varsity assignments were junior throwers David Wagner and Jacob Nielsen plus eighth grade thrower Jordan Jaster along with sophomore sprinter Case McCormick and eighth grade middle distance runner Jayden Prill .
Last year, the C/SG boys team finished fifth at the conference meet, sixth at sub-section, sixth again at section and tied for15th at state.
Veteran head coach Carl Fruechte returns as well. His program won the state championship in 2011.
Weather forced cancellation of this week's meet at Rushford. Next is the only home meet on Friday, April 12.
