Rochester Lourdes defeated the Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove girls soccer team by a score of 2-0 on Aug. 25, spoiling the Warriors' season opener.
Junior defender Haley Halverson clears the ball for the Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston girls who opened the Warrior varsity season at home Saturday afternoon against perennial power Rochester Lourdes.
It was a home match for C/H/SG and the second contest of the season for the Eagles, who had defeated Plainview-Elgin-Millville (P-E-M) 2-1 the previous day.
Junior forward Emily Glynn broke the ice, scoring with 10:59 remaining in the first period of play. Defender Becca Mehling, a senior, added the insurance goal with 5:48 left in the second half.
"It was a good game," Warriors head coach Tom Krinke said afterwards. "We may not have followed through exactly on what we wanted to do, but we had a good chance of winning... and Lourdes is a state-level team.
"Generally, we played well. We had our chances to score, and we played good defense. Just a couple of small mistakes cost us in this one, and when you play against a great team, that can happen."
"This team is still developing," Krinke pointed out.
Krinke noted last week that P-E-M could very well be the team to beat in the Three Rivers Conference this year, giving all the more weight to the Eagles' opening-round performance on the 24th.
Playing in the Hiawatha Valley League, the Eagles advanced to the state semifinals game last year before bowing out against Blake School, the team that won the tournament.
