Caledonia driver wins at Decorah

John Griffin of Caledonia took the pole position in Saturday’s Mod-Lites feature, then held off the field to secure his first checkered flag of the season in the Upper Iowa Speedway series.

Griffin’s K9 has been running well all year, racking up points with three third-place finishes while staying in contention on the leader board. With 811 season points, he holds third behind Rushford’s Curt Luhmann (916) and Eli Hershberger of Mabel (835).
Luhmann took second on August 2 while Adam Rogich of Mabel finished third. Rushford’s Chris Eide was fourth while Hershberger finished in 11th place.
The four-cylinder Hornets feature went to Ryan Ayers of Decorah, Iowa. John Schroeder of Castalia, Iowa, took second followed by Dakota Schroyer of West Union, Iowa. Breanna Lee of Mabel took sixth. Caledonia’s Christopher Schansberg finished in ninth place while Jay Mensink of Harmony took tenth.
The win keeps Ayers in the top spot on the leader board, totaling 876 points. Arthur Schott of Clermont, Iowa, is second with 857 while Mensink holds third at 776.
Adam Cline of Decorah won the Hobby Stocks feature, working his way up from a sixth-place start. Scott Spilde of Cresco, Iowa, took second while Steve Larson of Decorah checked in at third. Harmony drivers Tim and Chad Olson took 12th and 15th, respectively.
The season leader is Steve Holthaus of Cresco, with 856 points. Nathan Lerch of West Union is second at 821 while Joshua Ludeking of Decorah holds third with 818.
The B-Mods feature again drew 21 entrants. Matt Jones of Waukon, Iowa, collected his third UIS checkered flag followed by Chris Weigert of New Hampton, Iowa, and Dan Hovden of Decorah. Spring Grove’s Casey Knutson took fourth, while Jon Van Minsel, also of Spring Grove, finished fifth. Caledonia driver Taylor Knutson took eighth while Taylor Skauge of Caledonia finished 15th.
Jones continues to lead the series with 904 points. Dan Hovden is second with 876, and Weigert third at 786.
Mitch Hovden of Decorah won the Stock Car feature followed across the line by Dan Jones of Waterville, Iowa, and Kyle Falck of Decorah. Jake Lampert of Caledonia took 10th while Spring Grove’s Pete Solum finished 11th.
Mitch Hovden is also first on the leader board with 867 points. Falck checks in with 849 while Jones holds third with 793.
UIS series action moves to Cresco Speedway at the Howard County Fairgrounds on Sunday, Aug. 10. Hot laps start at 6:00 pm with racing at 6:30.
